Here are some pictures of Jackson frolicking outside yesterday. I'm pretty new to photography so I would appreciate any suggestions/advice on improving my photos!

What equipment are you shooting with?

My favorite pet photos are the ones that fill the frame with the subject, focus on the eyes, get down to their level, and have the whole face in the frame. I usually shoot in AV or TV mode so I can decide on depth of field or shutter speed myself. And have fun practicing!

Crop them a lot closer to him, since he is the subject. Also, the weeds might not be the best place to take pics.....maybe a freshly mowed lawn or field, but anything besides weeds. ;)

I would use AI Servo and center point focus...

Focus on the dog's head and eyes...

I would use ISO 400 or so to get a fast shutter speed. The f/stop you decide on depends if you want selective focus areas or maximum depth of field...

Shoot with your burst mode...

I agree that shooting in weeds or high grass might be problematic...

I start with the longest focal length and then zoom back s the dog approaches the camera...

Staying out of tall weeds/grass will keep that stuff out of the dogs face. It is a distraction, especially if you're shooting at the dog's eye level. The part of the field in the background where the grass looks low looks better to shoot him.
Shoot at the longer FL of your lens, from 100-135mm and try to fill the frame more with the dog. It will give you less DOF and more separation from the background.
A little boost in saturation and contrast might help the pic pop a little more.
KEEP shooting! :)

The grass isn't greener on the other side, it's green where you water it.

Ok thanks! The meadow is his favorite place to run free, so I just brought the camera along. Really hard to avoid weeds there but I'll take him to the beach or something for our next go. Thanks for the suggestions!!
