I have decided to take the plunge and buy a 5d2 and to be honest even the 5d3

I love shooting landscapes, parties and want to get into fashion/portraits

I'm thinking either

1) 17-40, sigma 50 1.4 & 70-200 f4 IS. Or
2) 24-70, 85 1.8 & 135 f2 or
3) 17-40 and a 24-105 and a sigma 50 1.4

Also.. Do you think it's worth me getting a 5d3 if I'm shooting landscapes and portraits.. I havent got ant desire to shoot sports or racing or kids

Thanks

Get a 5d2 instead of a 5d3 and spend the money on proper, high quality, brand lenses . Digital bodies last 3-4 years, lenses last a lifetime.

Don't cheap out on the long term investment

^ So true. For my shooting styles I would go with option #1, but instead of the 50mm I'd get a 100mm macro. I don't use 50mm much. Just me though.

I use the 24-70 and 70-200 for probably 99% of my portrait shoots.

Interesting.. I have been thinking about getting into macro photography.. How good is 100 macro for portraits?

Also, how does 24-70 go with landscapes.. I'm used to a 10mm wide angle on my 550d? I am assuming also that the 24 end of the24-70 has much less distortion than the 24-105

get a D800 for landscape!! you have to sell all your lenses if you go full frame anyway. I'd suggest buying the D800 and the following lenses

14-24 f/2.8
Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC
70-200 f/2.8 VR II

or if you want to stick with Canon, get the 5D2 +

Tokina 16-28 f/2.8
Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC
70-200 f/2.8 IS II

IMO, landscape and portrait photography don't necessarily lead you to the same set of lenses, but if I were trying to cover both with the lenses you have listed:

4) 17-40, 24-70, 70-200

That gives you the wide end for landscapes, the 24-70 has enough speed to work for portraits, and the 70-200 (2.8 or 4) is a great lens to have in the line-up for either.

My suggestion:

16-35L , 24-70L & possibly 70-200L (all f/2.8).

And if you want to shoot parties, which might include low-light work in ambient light, go for the 5D3. It has superb high ISO performance, in my opinion.

5D MK3, 7D, 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II, 24-70mm f/2.8L, 16-35mm f/2.8L, EF 1.4x TC MKIII, Nissin Di866 II, Nissin Di466
I hate being bipolar. It's great.

The 100mm is great for portraits, I'd bet between the macro and 70-200 you'd be pretty well set for portrait shooting until you start making enough money to buy the bigger/badder portrait lenses.

#2. The 24mm is wie enough for landscapes, and the 24-70mm zoom is great as an every day lens. Another option is the 24-105mm f/4L if you don't need the f/2.8 aperture. The 85mm is good for a portrait, and the 135mm f/2L is an amazing lens (one of my favorites).

Easy.....get whatever you want for the wide to ~70mm range, and then get the 70-200 IS II...
You will NOT regret it ;)

For wide, I chose the 17-40 which is BRILLIANT, but does have some distortion...but of course it does, it's an UWA!! ;)
Then a 50mm F/1.4 if I need 50mm...which I dont use very often..
honestly the 70-200 IS II lives on my 5D2 and other than that, the 17-40L...

Easily the best investment I have EVER made in glass was the 70-200 IS II...and that was after selling my insanely sharp(sharper than both the 135 and 100L's!!!) 70-200 F/4 IS

I do however miss the IS on the wide end as I shoot a lot of video too...so will probably end up getting a 24-105 for strictly video work..but I need the shallow DOF that the F/2.8 and F/1.4 lenses give me...the 17-40L is mainly for landscapes(which I havent really used it for yet as I just got it in the post yesterday. LOL..the 70-200 IS II has been living on my camera for a month now, and EVERY time I take it out, I get so much more than I expected from my images...it IS that good. period..)

I will probably end up selling the 17-40L and buying a 24-105 and 35L....but not for a while as I am broke.

YMMV!

Good luck!

this was something that surprised me, I picked up the f4 for longer FL landscape use.. and it is VERY sharp

I don't see anything in your current kit that would carry over to a 5D Mk II. So I think you should evaluate systems from scratch, and agree with the person who suggested the Nikon D800 would be a camera to look at.

That you feel the need to go to a third party maker for one lens and are bouncing between two Canon standard zooms suggests Canon's lens range isn't doing it for you. Of the lenses you are interested in, I think only the (excellent) 70-200mm f/4 IS is not offered by Nikon.
