After reading Dbriz's excellent thread on the Three Toed Woodpecker and it's cousin the Black Backed Woodpecker, I was thrilled to come across a Black Backed today in the woods.
This has to have been the most mellow woodpecker I've ever come across...at first i was tiptoeing around trying for better angles but by the last shots I had realized he just couldn't care less about the weird beast crashing around in the underbrush.
Here are a few of the shots I managed...mostly high iso but I cleaned them up best I could.

His back, is indeed black...

Thanks for looking in...

I'm definitely pleased, I must have spent almost 45 minutes with this fellow....my "new" favorite woodpecker!

It is always a treat to see another Black-backed find... excellent images Mike, a beautiful angle he gave you.

The personality of the "three toes" is mellow to say the least... once they are focused on the task at hand, they are in my opinion the "blue collar workers" of the woodpecker kingdom ;) I have spent hours following them from deadfall to deadfall.

Great shots. I wish I could say our Greater spotted Woodpeckers are approachable but sadly, the lack of photographs tells it's own story. One day.
