Hi Guys and Gals,

So tomorrow I'll be taking my brother in laws 5D3 and 50 F1.2L to a indoor Karate comp to try it out! I've had very limited time to use this camera, don't have the hard copy of the manual to take with me and am wanting to get some pointers from all the pros on here.

Anyone have some settings tips they'd like to share with me? I can't wait to get out there and use it :D I'm planning to buy my own in the next few months, so I'm really lucky to be able to grab this one and use it when I like on weekends (he works every weekend so its not getting used!)

After coming from a 60D, the AF system seems a little daunting. I'll read up tonight on the PDF manual i downloaded, any other help in the meantime would be most appreciated. I'll add some shots to this post tomorrow night to show how I went.. good or bad  ;)

Thanks in advance

Amanda

P.S. to give you an idea, here's a shot I prepared earlier :) 60D and nifty fifty - this is the type of lighting etc

1) Shoot in Manual mode. Set SS to 1/500, set aperture and ISO to what you want/need to get a +2/3 overexposure (to pull back in PP if you are shooting RAW). Set your exposure for the mat, not the white guis.

2) I would choose an aperture of around F/4 and choose spot focusing and move the point around so you can compose properly and still focus on faces, the 5D3 points are all very strong.

3) You can probably shoot with Case 1 just fine but use the Help button in the AF menu or read the manual if you want to choose a different one, like not switching focus from each fighter as they circle or jump around, you can do that.

Thanks for your help Higgs. I ended up putting some of your tips into practice and also played with Ai Servo, different ISO speeds, SS and of course Aperture.

Had a fun time. Got lots more keepers than I ever did with the 60D. 50mm is way to short on FF! And I need loads more practice! Also the AWB seems to be far more accurate. The 60D often got very confused with this type of lighting, as you can see from my example in my original post.

Here's a few from today, all have been cropped to some level.

looks good, the guis are white and you froze the subjects! you did it right.

now look into flash photography if they allow it and really make your subjects pop by under exposing a stop for the back ground and using the flash to stop the subject motion.

Thanks Higgs. Yes and I also need a longer lens too, I took a shot where the glove connects right in the middle of one of the competitors faces, be nice if I could have filled the frame!

Thanks again for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it.
