I find it extremely interesting. Way beyond my capabilities though. I often marvel at how some people are so darn smart.

I'd love to sit down with this guy and learn by his side. That may be the ONLY shot I'd have of understanding half of it.

Thanks for the link

I have not yet made myself a great pano, I probably haven't tried hard enough...;)

For me this just shows that even if you have a 1 pixel camera by joining pictures and making a pano you could mae an 8, 10, 12 px pictures...interesting.

Artan

Or you can just a get a big film camera. I think they say they are getting like 4 GigaPixels out of this thing now.

I think this stuff is kinda interesting as an academic curiosity, and may find a practical purpose many many years into the future. I also think that the scanning a medium format negative sounds a lot easier than stitching 196 seperate shots together.

But I'm struggling to think of a situation where there is going to be a strong demand for 3m x 2m, 300dpi, magazine quality images. Then again Bill Gates is famously (though not sure how acurately) quoted, in the early 80's, as saying "Why would a home computer ever need more than 640k of memory?" which has since been ridiculed for it's shortsightedness.

I've only read bits of the gigapxl project, but I really like that fact that someone is "archiving" these super detailed images of the US. I'm sure those will come in handy in 100 years on the history channel, lol. Those images are ALLOT more detailed then anything out there currently.
