Anyone know if it only works in front of the camera? Just found out my old RC-1 will work with my new 7D. The RC-1 has been in a box with old gear in the closet so took awhile to find. And what I remember was when I used it years ago with my Rebels you had to be in front of the camera, worked great for self portraits but that's about it.

Yes, only works in front of the camera. Range is not great either.

Also, it is the ONLY way you can remotely start/stop video. That is why they now include IR remote function with the 7D, 5D Mk II, 5D Mk III, and 1D Mk IV.

This, although I can't say I agree with the range comment. I've had zero problems kicking off the shutter from 20-25 feet.

Always works well for me at short distances, but I had some trouble once doing an outdoor group shot from about 15 feet away. It seemed like it would only fire about half the time. Maybe I wasn't being accurate enough pointing the remote at the camera.

Mine works fine so far. Outside at around 20 feet no prob. Ill have to see it range now.

I have gotten it to work from behind the camera once in a while but I think that was just luck. I was also just behind the camera too.
