Canon Rebel XSI Question...

Hey All!

I recently bough a Rebel XSI (I'm new to photography) I notice that when I use "Buld Mode" the shuttle closes as soon as I release the button. Isn't is suppose to be open until I press the button again? I'm force to use 30 secs shuttle speed instead. Also, do I really have to update the firmware? Currently 1.0.9 What are the advantage if I do upgrade?

Does this camera have "Rear Flash" Feature?

Below are my first pictures ever! KEEP IN MIND THAT I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOING. I'm just having fun with my very first DSLR

I assume that you must be talking about "Bulb" mode. It works as you describe. You have to hold the shutter button down to keep the shutter open in bulb mode. You may want to get a cheap wired remote for this to avoid camera shake.

By "Rear Flash" I again assume that you are talking about "Second Curtain Sync" and yes, your camera has it. It is in the Flash menu.

As said above, that is how bulb mode is. Every SLR that I know of does that. I went on amazon though, and picked up a wired remote for less then 5 bucks, and it works amazingly well. Great product for the price. This will allow you to fire the shutter without touching the camera so you dont shake it, as well as lock the shutter open for as long as you desire. I took a 4 minute exposure at night once with it, and I could've gone longer.

Also, what is he spinning around to throw the sparks like that? That is really awesome. Beats the hell out of the POI pictures I got at a dance lol

So I don't need to keep the shuttle button pressed to keep it open with this remote?

Back in the old film days, in addition to "B" or bulb mode, I believe there was also a "T" mode in which you would press the shutter button once and release it to open the shutter, and then later press and release again to close the shutter. Digital SLR's only have the "B" mode.

Correct. You can press the button on the remote and the shutter will fire. But when you press the button and then slide it, the camera keeps the shutter open until you slide it back.

like the post above, but with a three prong video cable you touch the ends and depending on which ends it acts like a "half press" and a full shutter function. A shutter remote release doesn't need a battery
