The photo is not great but I only had a couple of seconds to take two quick shots. This was in southeast Missouri.

Thanks I don't know my birds very well and I am pretty sure I have never seen one of these around here. Maybe it is passing through this part of the state.

It looks like a summer tanager that's just starting to get that bright red color. I could be totally wrong though. Very nice shot

It could be one not long out of the nest, it looks like he's got that "rubber lip" look in the corner of his mouth.

Female Summer Tanager.

It is a young bird like Sharon said. If it was a young male then it would have much more red on it at this time in the year. HERE (external link) is a shot of a young male (seen like this march-july) before turning into full adult male plumage.
