Decided to part with my Canon 50mm f/1.4 and get on the Sigma bandwagon. I have 60D so no MFA, but was hoping to win lottery and guest what I lost.

Focus from f/1.4 to f/4.0 is soft. Understand DOF is too shallow or thin at f/1.4, but does anyone here expect good images at f/1.4 for Sigma 50mm ? I guess my options are to get another one or send to Sigma with body for calibration. I hope they pay for back and forth. Maybe updgrade to 5D MK II or 7D to get MFA.

soft wouldn't be necessarily be solved by MFA...is the focus actually off, or is it just not sharp enough for you

and you'll probably have to pay to send it in...they'll send it back for free

Post some pics

All jpeg's with no post processing.

Except 1st and 2nd one at f/5, other ones don't look really good. Not that this is the best real world test. I expect something good. Last one at f/3.2 has very shallow DOF. One thing I have noticed with this lens is incredibly shallow DOF even at at f/3.2

Send it in for calibration- it will come back spectacular. Don't waste any time buying and selling multiple copies.

Where did you buy it from? Amazon gave me credit to cover the cost of sending in one of my sigma lenses I bought from them. Sigma does cover return shipping, mine was sent 3 day select.

I would definitely send it in regardless. I know you want to pay $489 or whatever and have it right, but adding another $20-30 to ship in the body and lens with insurance still gives you a very good overall deal.

T3i, Sigma 10-20, Sigma 30 1.4, 18-55 kit, 55-250, YN-565, a few books, some software, and a desire to get good.....

Got it from Amazon. I'll have to see my options at this point in time. Planning to go 7D or 5D MK II in the near future. I have 580EX II and with 15-85mm at my arsenal indoors, I could skip the Sigma for now. Decisions....decisions.

I agree..... figure out your direction so you're not just throwing money around.

The one thing I notice about the pictures is off axis or just not square to straight line shots. I really notice off kilter with ultra wide, and it is something the same for very shallow depth of field shots as well.

play with some real world shots before sending it in, I advise to send it in to be fully confident regardless but just to get some use out of it before taking just some arbitrary test shots so you can compare later on as well
