Other than that the video quality looked good to me. Pans were smooth and nothing looked too jittery. What did you use for stabilization?

Thats still stabilization. Anything that you use to keep the camera from shaking is stabilizing it and therefore IMO falls into the category.

Yea flyers really are the only way to do walking shots. The Steadicam Merlin is pretty awesome and well worth the money, however any flyer you get be aware that they get too heavy to hold extremely fast and you really do IMO need an arm and vest for them.

ahh Ok, I thought you was talking about the software stuff havent really got on with that yet. Could you reccomend a good one?

Was looking at one with a vest but saying that im unsure as we dont really do much with it.

Can I add a vest to it or do I need to buy it all at once?

If youre sure your not going to be using it much, or your sure your runs with it will be very short (read under ten minutes for all takes) then you could probably do without the vest and arm. However if its a look you like or need to get the capture, then IMO the Steadicam Merlin Arm and Vest is the best way to go and you can use it with the Steadicam Merlin or Pilot and there are adapters to use it with other brands like the Glidecam. Though be prepared, good video gear is even MORE than good photography gear.

That shot of the camera following the guy's feet (you?) up the stairs needed to be longer. A steadicam wouldn't have been the tool to use for that. Something much more simple and cheap.
The X-Grip would have been perfect for that.

And yeah, like Ben said, audio. I won't go any further as you already mentioned that wouldn't be used. A simple $150 VideoMic Pro would have helped out that situation if indeed you were trying to capture real audio.

I'm done telling people around here how to do audio the right way. It usually requires more than the standard $200 budget people set aside for audio. Most don't have the budget or/nor the time to really spend on this very important part of video production.

I'll agree with Ben that you did pretty well with your monopods. They allow a freedom that tripods don't have, yet remain fairly steady as long as a longer lens isn't used on them.

Also, Take Your Hands OUT of Your Pockets!!! ;) That drove me nuts right away. ;) ;) ;) :p

Thanks guys. Really helpful.

As with the steadi cam probably end up doug a take or two with it by video.

So might just consider the handheld part for now.

The stair shot was done with holding a monopod upside down inbetween fingers so not ideal. That's why not much footage.

The audio side we have 4 recorders as well as some Shure mics.
But as it was a scout we made do with on cam which is far from ideal I know.

Gotta start somewhere and I think you learned a lot from the experience which is all that matters in the end if its not a paid gig!

There is an out takes video as well which can be found on pauls vimeo page if you want to see that.

Yeah we learned loads from it.

Considering this is our first ever video I dont feel it came out too bad.

Yeah unpaid but like you said we have to start somewhere. Hopefully do a few more on a tf basis and should of ironed out our mistakes by then.

Thanks for all your advice.

Hopefully when we get to the video shoot we will have some more ideas to put into practise by then
