Having a problem with the main dial on my 50D (the dial on the top behind the shutter button). Pulled it out to use it and the dial feels like it is skidding when moved left. Moving to the right there is no problem. I can't see any obvious way of removing it and I'm pretty far from a camera repair shop. As I usually use Av, I have no way of manually selecting larger f stops. Fortunately there is a way to control it on the LCD display and whether intentional or not, selecting the f stop on the LCD uses the quick control dial, a very fortunate save for me. Anyone had this problem or is it just me. I also have my 5D with me but would like to not carry a disabled camera around.

Thanks

Haven't heard about that happening before, but it sounds like one side of the 'nubs' inside that engage with the wheel has worn away / broken off. I'd have no idea how to even start with fixing it - it would probably have to be a send-it-off-to-canon job.
As an afterthought, can't you assign the main control dial to be the main controller in Av / Tv etc?

Have heard of this before:

No idea how to fix it myself other than sending it in to Canon....

Sorry,

John

My 50D does this from time to time.

I reckon it's a dust problem. What I do is get a rocket blower and give half a dozen real strong blasts of air around the dial. If than doesn't work, I place by lips over the dial and blow really hard (without spitting into the dial). This always works for me.

^^^^ I will try this. This doesn't feel like an electrical contact problem. I can feel actual resistance preventing the "nubs" from turning. The wheel itself turns but feels like it is spinning on the hub. Damn.

My 50D has done this 3 out of the last 4 times I used it. The main dial would just spin either direction without changing the aperture (in AV mode) or shutter speed (in TV mode).

The problem would just start on it's and go away after a few minutes of me frantically trying to get it to work.

I sent my camera to Canon on Monday, I'll post what the bill turns out to be when I get it back.

Update:
Got an estimate from Canon for:

Main dial not working.
Rattle in camera

It didn't say what they were going to do to fix it.

Didn't know I had a rattle, never shook it. Wonder if UPS was mean to it.

Estimate was for $241, 7 working days.
