My department is getting a Canon T2i. I want to install the ML to adjust the Gain Control. My boss is wondering if the install will void the warranty.

Thanks.
JD

it's a piece of software that runs from the card.

Does it void my warranty? Edit

It is very similar to CHDK, which has a FAQ: Does using the CHDK program void your warranty?:

First, please bear in mind that CHDK comes with no warranty for any use; you use it at your own risk. What follows is just a few thoughts, and is not a legal opinion. Many believe that using the CHDK does not harm your warranty, since it is said to be loaded into the memory only temporarily (turn off the cam and it's gone completely) and that it leaves the original camera firmware untouched

They include an email exchange with Canon:

After researching this software on the internet it appears that CHDK doesn't make any actual changes to your camera. If you delete the CHDK software from your memory card, or if you choose not to activate the CHDK software on the card (or remove and replace the batteries), then the camera will behave absolutely normally - nothing has been (or ever is) changed, so the warranty is not affected.

The Magic Lantern firmware is distributed with NO WARRANTY and NO GUARANTEES are provided. It might work. It might not. It hasn't destroyed any cameras yet, but who knows.

Take the card out, and its gone... so, just make sure to take the card out if you want to send it in.

Wrong.

ML changes the internal bootflag of the camera to make it boot from a card. That's why if you install ML and try to use a card without ML later the camera locks.

So to uninstall ML you have to format the card from the camera with the option "remove ML" that will revert the bootflag of the camera.

Having said that there might be some kind of log or record or flag inside the camera registering that a firmware was loaded at some point external from Canon.

So I would say yes, it voids the warranty unless Canon has no way to know that a firmware was loaded. (We don't know!)

I was under the impression that it was an actual firmware overwrite for the Canon DSLRs and that it did in fact void the warranty.

It loads on top of the Canon firmware, what I don't know is if Canon has a way to know that the bootflag was changed and that a software was loaded on top of the firmware.

Ah, so its not actually a replacement then? Interesting. Yea I wonder how they might know then... Is it confirmed that they do?

The cards I use for Video have ML on, the cards I use for still photography do not, this works very well, I haven't had a lockup yet, I'm using the latest 11.12.22 version of ML on a 550D.
