I need a heavier duty tripod for a couple reasons, one being using a heavy 500mm or 800mm lens. Right now though, I need it only for the 100-400L. But I'm thinking that in the near future, I will get one of the longer primes.

Is the 2540 too lightweight for the bigger lenses? If it's OK, should I consider getting the M20 ballhead rather than the M10 I've been thinking of which will be good for right now?

P.S.: I'm a big Feisol fan, but when it comes to heavier weight, stable sticks, I will stick with Gitzo.

If youre planning on using 500mm plus lenses, then I say stick with the 3-series or above. Even Gitzo states their 2-series is most stable at 300mm and below. I LOVE my GT3541LS with the Markins Q20. VERY stable, though Ive never tripod anything larger than a 400mm on it...

Thanks. That's what I was thinking.

It's good to future-proof the purchase. The new Gitzo systematic leaflet recommendations show a 200mm lens starting at a 2-series, a 400mm starting at a 3-series, a 600mm starting at a 4-series, and an 800mm starting at a 5-series.

As I'm sure you know Gitzo have produced a completely redesigned range of systematics and they are selling at top prices as the company milks the early adopters. They'll come down in price a bit eventually. In the meantime you might be able to source an earlier version from Europe where they are apparently still on sale.

While you're thinking about the Markins Q20 take a look at the Arca-Swiss Z1 with its 54mm asymmetrical ball. It's good.
