I recently installed Gimp 2.8 on my PC running Windows XP and I've hit a problem.
I have been using the UFRAW plug-in for Gimp to process RAW files, but when I now try to run UFRAW< I get error messages stating that various .dll files can't be found.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling UFRAW, but the problem persists. Any advice would be much approeciated.
Thanks
Chris

My guess would be that UFRAW hasn't been updated for gimp 2.8. That and considering gimp is not supported for windows, I would just wait. Gimp 2.10 will hopefully be out within the year and that will be a MAJOR improvement. 16 bit color and gegl support.

They have a 2.8 installer for windows from the gimp.org site.

I don't know about ufraw, but G'mic tried to install into the old 2.6 plugin folder.

The fix was watching where the install was going, and directing it to the new 2.8 plugin folder... G'mic worked fine then.

If the ufraw doesn't allow you to direct it there on install, you could try manually moving the plugin from the old folder into the new.

I have the same problem. Un-installed Gimp 2.6xx and un-installed UFRaw as well. The installed Gimp 2.8 and then installed UFRaw. But still the same problem. It seems like Gimp 2.8 is supposed to install the dll, but does not. Gimp 2.6 did install the dll. So, if we want to use UFRaw, we will have to go back to Gimp 2.6 till the Windows installer is fixed?

I found the dll's UF raw is complaining about. Gimp is installed as 64 bit program and UF raw as 32 bit. The files of Gimp is therefore in the programs folder and not in the x86 Programs folder where Raw is looking for them. I copied all the dll files to UF raw's directory. Now it is not complaining about not finding files, but still will not run. Just giving a simple message that it was unable to start correctly.

Thanks for your responses.

I've tried examining where DLLs are in the 2.6 directory and copying them to the same location under 2.8, but to no avail. I've tried leaving them in the 2.6 directry, but that doesn't work either. For now I'm goig to use DPP to work on the RAW files, convert them into JPEGs and then use Gimp 2.8, which I really like.

I looked at the whole thing a bit closer. Under Gimp 2.6 UFraw is installed in the Gimp 2.0 folder. That is the Programs (x86) folder. Now with Gimp 2.8, the Gimp install folder has changed to the Programs folder, ie, not the x86 folder. So Ufraw still install in Gimp 2.0 and it is not in the same folder anymore. The one is a 64 bit (Gimp) and the other 32bit (UFraw). Therefore the two can not communicate anymore and we will have to wait for the programmers to come up with an answer.

Your way is one way to do it in the mean time. The other obvious to go back to Gimp 2.6 which I did. I am tempted to go your way as well. However, as a beginner, I think it is easier to go the 2.6 route, as the learning curve is easier with the available "Meet the Gimp" videos. In the vids, the old keyboard short cuts is used, for instance. The ctrl, shift E shortcut has changed in 2.8 to ctrl, shift J. This can be very frustrating if you do something and it does not work. There is bound to be other changes as well.

So for now, I will continue learning in 2.6.

OK, found a way to use UFraw with Gimp 2.8. Install Gimp as normal. It will install in C:\Program Files\GIMP 2. Then install UFraw, but specify install folder also as C:\Program Files\GIMP 2. It will add \UFraw. Delete that part.

UFraw will still not open as a standalone, but if you open a raw file(CR2) in Gimp, UFraw pops up.

Also have alook at this thread:

Am glad you've found a way to make it work. I'll give it a try later.

I tried Tomelize's suggestion and it works perfectly for me too! Many thanks for sharing your idea with us!

I too tried Tomelize's suggestion, (i.e., install UFraw in C:\Program Files\GIMP 2.) It worked for me too.

Mr. Tomelize doesn't take credit for this, but I checked

and I can't find the same explanation there.

The method does not work anymore, if you use Partha,s new install where bugs is fixed. So I reverted back to a stand alone UFraw install. You do this by installing Gimp 2.6 to a different path. I used another drive. Then install UFraw to this same path. UFraw then run a a stand alone, using dlls from gimp 2.6.

I then install Gimp 2.8 to its normal default path.

I can therefore do my raw work with UFraw, export the file I want to where I want and then open it with Gimp 2.8.

I can't find the same explanation there.

hehe, read between the lines...

[QUOTE=tomelize;14494581]The method does not work anymore,

It's working for me:

  1. Install UFraw in C:\Program Files\GIMP 2.
  2. Open GIMP 2.8
  3. Open 1 or more RAW files in GIMP 2.8
  4. The RAW file(s) will open in UFRaw
  5. Click OK
  6. The files will now open in GIMP 2.8

I appreciate Tomelize's previous suggestion, but his latest method seems to me to be an unnecessary (and slower) work-around.

I can see that what I said is confusing. The first way will still work on the 'official' downloads. I was however referring to a new download, specifically for a Windows install, released by Partha, with some bugs fixed.

His web page is located here (external link).
