Once in a while I like to take basic moon shots, but when the moon is in an interesting "phase", not full like Saturday night, but I woke up early this morning, and the moon was out and slightly "shaded", good!

With my trusty ol' 30D with the 100-400 lens and a 1.4x TC, here is an uncropped shot:

And it yields a nice crop:

Another one as it had moved across the frame:

Looks very nice but in the larger moon picts there is some noise you should deal with . Other than that , nice !

Hey, thanks, these were very quickly processed so I didn't even look for noise, although I know that can be a factor, especially with the ol' 30D!

Hey, thanks!

So, the only one I had done any exposure boosting to was the first one, so I did a bit of masking and NR -- what do you think?

I can still see there is noise . Are you doing De-Noise first or last ? I been told that De-Noise should be done first before any editing , that way when you sharpen then usually you can sharpen more that if done sharpening to start with . So now i have been doing De-Noise first off and i actually agree it does somewhat better .

I only used Lightroom, so the NR and sharpening and such just go together.

That being said, you must have pretty sharp eyes! 'Course I'm over 60, and once you get over 50 your close sharp vision starts to go, and even with my reading glasses on I tend to not "spot" fine levels of noise. And, this is pretty fine noise compared to what the 30D produces when shot at higher ISOs (these were shot at ISO 100.

Actually, the second two were shot with a bit brighter exposure and there was no "boosting" at all in LR so they are probably better for "presentation" with no NR needed...

Its not noise an in sensor noise its an effect of the use of LR's sharpening and detail sliders. Close up it almost looks like little worms if pushed too hard.

60D | Canon 15-85 | Canon 200mm f/2.8L II | Canon 400mm f/5.6L | 580EX II. And a heap of Astrophotography gear.

Ah, well that's certainly different. I'll have to check that out, I'm getting ready to go run an errand, maybe this evening. Interestingly, though, it did seem as if the first pic, the one I had boosted the exposure and then some shadows on, looked grainy in the first version -- like finely grainy, compared to the one that got the better exposure, but I'll have to look at the sharpening issue. I'll get back on later, if you'll check in!
