I spotted a field of daffodils in a field above Keuka Lake. The lake is shaped like a "Y", with Bluff Point being a predominate feature where the lake splits. I went back four days in a row, laying in the field trying to get a shot that included the backlit flowers and the sun setting behind the point. I shot with a variety of lenses and settings but I am not happy with what I got. The flowers finally died, but there is always next year.... How would you shoot this scene and/or what could be done in lightroom or photoshop that would get the best results? (The images are actually very sharp - I need to get a better handle on how to post images that remain sharp)

There are a lot of different ways to approach a sunset with foreground that you want to retain, so each person will probably give you just their personal choice. We also don't know the limitations of the terrain.

I prefer the location of the sun in the second shot, a little to the right and lower on the horizon than the first shot. But, the trees covering that right portion of the river distract me. So, I would probabaly try to move to the left to clear out those trees somewhat, but keeping the sun in the same part of the picture. I would have included more of the flowers in the foreground, and make sure there was enough depth of field to cover them. Then, I would have shot it as an HDR to be able to pull up the foreground without washing out the beauty of the sunset. If you don't like HDR, there is always the 'old' way of using a fill light to capture the foreground.

You have the rest of the year to experiment with different techniques before the flowers come back again. ;)

i saved it and played around with it, you can pull up the flowers - especially the ones on the right - to be much more visible. there is a lot of color in the flowers i couldn't see until it was tweaked. it's a nice shot.

The best method (imo) is to take two exposures: one for the sky and one for the land and layer them in Photoshop blending using a layer mask. A more advanced technique I've used effectively in the past is to take a lot of exposures and create an HDR of the sky only...then layer-blend the HDR sky over a single good exposure of the land. It creates a beautiful sky and no one will no it's a partial HDR.
