I am noticing a strange red outline around the lime on the left in the picture below. What could this be?

I was using Canon 7D with EF 24-70mm f/2.8

Shooting Mode Aperture-Priority AE
Tv( Shutter Speed ) 1/400
Av( Aperture Value ) 2.8
Metering Mode Spot Metering
Exposure Compensation 0

Image Size 3888x2592
Image Quality MRAW
White Balance Mode Auto
AF Mode One-Shot AF
AF area select mode Spot AF

Those are chromatic aberration. It's really a defect in the optics. It is more severe in some lens than in others. Even from copy to copy of the same lens model will see different level of CA.
Shooting against backlit situation would make CA more obvious.

Strange. My 24-70mm lens is about 3 years old and I can't remember seeing this before.

The light was behind me so backlighting does not apply in this case. The sharpness is set at 3 in my 7D and I cranked it up to 7 in Canon's DPP software.

My 50mm does this when it is too close to the subject- i.e. near mfd. When I put it into live view- it nearly vanishes.. Makes me wonder if it goes away when the subject is a bit further away- and is the behavior with live view similar ?

Unique example of CA.
It can be pronouced w lighting and distance.
Notice the blue green line also ??
L grade glass reduces this but does not eliminate all.
PS works all the time or ...
Put the Lime in the Coconut and shake it all up ...

CA aside, I just HATE AV/TV. Your pic was shot with AV @ 70mm. So why 1/400 and ISO400?

The algorithm is just flawed big time. You could have a cleaner shot with ISO 200 1/200 with Manual....

All modes fail except manual seriously...

While I would agree in this situation manual would have been a good choice to make a blanket statement like that is very bold.

actually OP might have picked iso400 himself...that explains the high ss. If OP had auto ISO however...

Wow if that's CA, it's surprisingly strong for that lens. My little used Canon 18-200mm is known for its extremely high levels of CA, but I have taken no shots with it where the CA is that obvious, that sharp and that red. I'm wondering if its a combination of factors.

Strange. My 24-70mm lens is about 3 years old and I can't remember seeing this before.

That may be the problem right there. Check out this article from LensRentals.com. There is one lens, and only one lens, that they found to get worse with age (2 years of rental use in their case). You will NEVER guess which one. ;):

http://www.lensrentals.com …0/the-limits-of-variation (external link)

So that could be your issue right there. Or maybe not, who knows. Something to be aware of though.

The light was behind me so backlighting does not apply in this case. The sharpness is set at 3 in my 7D and I cranked it up to 7 in Canon's DPP software.

Gonna address the backlighting statement too... It isn't actually backlighting that makes the CA more visible, it is just a much lighter/brighter area behind the in-focus subject that does it. The light source can be in any direction. Backlighting might not have been the best term for cfcRebel to use.

I have a faulty 3 yrs old L lens? No way!

Thanks everyone for your opinions and suggestions. That article about the 28-70mm f/2.8L is making me nervous. I guess it's time to buy that 17-40mm lens I have my eyes on.

If the article is correct and that's your problem, it should be easily fixable. I know Canon won't fix it for free, but if its due to a design flaw, they should.

I'm going to take another guess....looking at the center lime, on the upper left of it, I'm seeing a larger red spot......is it possible that there was something red reflecting some light back on the limes? To me, it doesn't look like CA.....but I very well may be wrong.
