Hi guys
I'm finally retiring my old desktop monitor (yes don't laught, but it's still CRT, with damn good colors), and changing it for new one. Good/great color representation is main thing, anything else is secondary.
So I'm down to basically two options. Cheap Dell U2410, and not so cheap Nec Spectraview Reference PA241W. After reading all these things on web, Dell doesn't look all that bad, especially considering I can get it for 3 times less then Nec. And with today's photo prices, extra 1000eur is not all that little money nowadays (especially since there are another 2 1dx bodies in waiting queue too).
So anyone, who would have experiences with BOTH of these two monitors? Real experience, not "I read something somewhere, but never saw anyone of those", and not that "I have Dell, I don't have money for NEC, so Dell is best monitor on world" either. I would really appreciate any comment with real life experiences, to help me decide. It's not a problem to pay those 1300eur for Nec, if it's a lot better, but if it's a little bit better, so little you hardly notice difference, saved 1000eur won't hurt my companies budget either ;)

Thanks for help in advance,
Primoz

I recently changed from lovely CRT's to ugly LCD's.

I've now got two Dells, a 2711 and the 2410. (if you have the space, get the 2711 over the 2410, more resolution :)

The Dells are comparable to the old CRT's (Sony Trinitron based IBM P275), being about 98% as good.
The NEC's and Eizo's I looked at were about 99% as good, the difference being at the very limits of the blacks and whites.

Essentially the Dells are good monitors, not as well built as the NEC's, but they do the job.

BUT, and this is a problem the NEC and Dells both have, the move to Wide Gamut totally messed up my prints.
In non-colour managed programs, sRGB images look terrible thanks to the conversion from sRGB to aRGB.
In colour manged programs they look fantastic, but the vast majority of the printers in the world are only sRGB, and I'm now working and editing in a wider gamut colour space than the printers can print, so see more detail and information on screen than in print.
I have to be careful as the printer will crush the blacks etc, and I'm still having a hard time getting reds in skin tones looking right.

I also had a problem with the sRGB mode on the Dell, it's rubbish and does not calibrate properly.
I then had a problem with my graphics driver reading the Dell as wide gamut (from SSID) and doing its only sRGB mode, which again looked terrible and did not calibrate properly.

Now, after a few months I've got the colour management sorted, but I'm still having a hard time adjusting to the different brightness. Because the monitors are back light, they display brightness of images differently to a CRT.
It's a subjective thing, and something I just have to get used to.

However, I'll be building a second work station next year, and will seriously consider getting an sRGB (not wide gamut) monitor to run on it, something like on of the HP models, or if budget permits one of the lesser spec NEC's.
