A photo of mine on Flickr wants to be used by a company in Belgium. Attached flickr email -

Dear Mr *******,

My name is K****** M********, communication responsible at Traficon, a Belgian company that develops video technology for vehicle and pedestrian detection.

We have been recently looking on FlickR for pictures of the Dartford tunnel to be used in commercial and PR communication. We came across this beautiful photo of yours: http://www.flickr.com/photos/benus/2902325786/ (external link). My question to you: would it be possible to use this photo in a high-res version for a news release, brochure or website, provided that we mention your name?

My reason for asking is that we recently have been chosen by the UK Highways Agency to provide video-based incident detection technology for the Dartford tunnel. Should you be interested to know more about us, please see www.traficon.com (external link).

I’m looking forward to your answer.

Thanks in advance.

He is right, it's a great photo :D

I want to email him and see what they "may" be willing to pay for it. Sod my name, I want money! ;)
Any idea what a fair amount for both parties would be?
Thanks
Ben

Damn right you want paid. I'm sure the UK Highways Agency didn't ask them to use their equipment for free as long as they mention their name. As for how much, I don't know, but I'm sure that others will chip in with some answers.

He's already made his offer: $0 and he'll give a photo credit. These usually go no further if you ask for money, so I'd deal with it rather swiftly rather than spend a lot of time researching pricing.

Another company did the same last year, but eventually they paid me £30-00. I was really happy. The day after I got a £35-00 parking fine!
In with one hand, out with the other :D

My email back -

Thank you for your interest in my photograph taken in the Dartford tunnel.

For the one off charge of 70 Euros, you can have full publishing rights to the photograph for whatever use you require it for.

If you are interested, please reply.

Regards
Ben Daniels

(World renowned Dartford tunnel photographer :-) )

His reply -

Dear Ben,

Thank you for your quick response. 70 euros is very reasonable to me.

Is it available in high res? If possible, I’d like to have it at 300 dpi and at least 20 cm wide.

How can we arrange payment and invoice?

Best regards,

@ Tracknut - If you dont ask, you dont get. :-)

I wish I had asked for more now!! :-)

Always ask for money - photo credits in newspapers wont pay the power bill

To be used for eternity? Contract? etc?

I dont care what they do with it.
70 Euros is better than a poke in the eye.

I was told by Tracknut that I wouldnt get anything for it except my name, so I am happy, and so are they.

I think you misread my post. I told you his offer was for $0 and your name, and that his starting point was pretty low. Congrats on getting something for the shot...

Congrats for getting money for it. Now be careful that they don't send you a check for more than that & ask you to cash it & refund the difference. ;)
