I have a mid 2010 15" MacBook Pro I7 2.8Ghz 8GB RAM. I just installed a Crucial M4 512 GB SSD. I have no performance issues with LR4 or CS5.

Arent those SSDs awesome!!! I use a mirrored pair for my desktops OS drive and they have been so sweet!

I had a 120GB OWC as a boot drive and a 7200 500GB for data. I was slowly running out of space on the 120 so I bought a bigger one. I may put the 120 back in and use the 512 for data. For now the 512 alone is more than enough. I don't think I can go back to "conventional" hard drives since switching to SSD's. Computer runs much cooler with the SSD. Battery life has also improved. I can't believe Apple charges $1,200 for the 512GB SSD! My M4 was "only" a little more than $600.

Yea, I think you might lose a bit more (ie cost you a bit more per year) to rock one of the more expensive models. I always buy the 13" as I hate large laptops.

I don't think I'd like a larger laptop either, but the dedicated video card sounds pretty nice to me. I don't know how important it would really be though?

I can imagine so, but there's a pretty big difference between that and my slouchy 13" Duco core MBP ;)

Ok, did a little more research and thinking and I'm pretty sure I want to take the plunge to an i5 core.

Pretty much two options for me, without spending a ton of money:
2011 13" model
2010 15" model

They're both i5 models with a duo-core. I think that would be good enough. From what I understand there will be a pretty big difference with the Core 2 Duo I'm running now. The 15" screen appeals to me, but I wouldn't know about transportation though. Also: the 15" has a dedicated video card, where the 13" doesn't have one: would I notice a big difference? Apart from post processing photo's, I also work with HD video (Final cut, after effects) that's pretty heavy on my system, would a video card help in that aspect?

I reckon the mid-2010 15" i5 with NVIDIA Geforce GT-330M video card (that sounds like total jibberish to me, but I reckon it will be better than the early-2011 video card the 13" is rocking?) would be a pretty good solution. Upgrading will cost me 250-300€. Any input? Thanks in advance. I will also be installing 8GB of RAM and an SSD.

Advantages of the 13" are portability and the ability to use 1333mhz RAM. Is there a 'big' difference in performance between 1066 and 1333mhz?

Will be a massive improvement of your old Core 2, but good enough is an open question.
It will be great for as long as you have the 5Dc, a move onto a 7D, or 5D2 or 3 would start to slow it down.

Luckily for me I'm a 'poor' college student. I would like a 5D2 and would see myself upgrading in the next few years, but I would probably only be using the sRAW/mRAW mode: 21mp is simply way too much for what I want and need.

As for the MBP's: 13" 2011 vs 15" 2010, which do you think would be the better choice for my current line-up, with video editing in mind?

I know, but I simply dont have the budget for that. Im a poor college student...

I sold my Macbook yesterday for 650 euro, which I think is a good price if you consider the condition it was in. My budget is around 800-850, which will get me a 2010 MBP 15" i5 or a 2011 MBP 13" i5. Which one should I go for?

15" advantage: big screen, dedicated video card
13" advantage: portable, 1333mhz RAM

I also do some video editing, and plan to get more into video than I am now. Whats more important for video? The 1333mhz RAM or the dedicated video card? And how big of a difference makes 1066mhz RAM vs 1333mhz for general use?

Thanks in advance guys! You've been really helpful so far!

? Apple never really changes their price points of their laptops, they just sell the newer model for the same price. So if you can afford a new MacBook Pro now, youll be able to afford the newer model that is supposedly coming out soon too. If you can wait that is.

And they are not going to be a whole lot faster than the second hand i5 he is looking at

The next leap won't happen until the i5 and i7 is replaced by what ever the next leap in CPU technology is.

The RAM difference won't be noticeable, but if you do any Video editing with Apples software then the one with the better graphics card should perform better

I have a feeling this is going to change with the new MacBook Pro. It looks like a total redesign. Retina display, flash drive for boot up, ultra thin design just to name a few. This model may do away with the conventional hard drive in favor of SSD chips ($$$'s!). To get an idea of how much this costs, go to Macsales.com and look at the SSD upgrade prices for the MacBook Air.

True, and I do see your point and have heard the same as far as the rumors go. However they are already very expensive for their hardware and always have been. If they push that any higher they are going to lose sales. I think they are just going to give more and keep the price points the same. Either way there is def going to be an entry level price point. They cant do away with the around $1000 laptop. Im sure theyll be a standard $1200 MacBook Pro 13 config just like always.
