300mm L f4 IS with 1.4 TC do you have any examples?

Hi All,

I have heard the 300 f4 L IS works well with the 1.4 TC, can anyone back this up? I am pretty sold on the lens.

If the images are sharp with th TC then that will give me a huge reach on my crop sensor 60D.

I have decided not to buy the 100-400 as I know it won't be as sharp as my 70-200 f4 L IS and that's my benchmark.

Do you need 300mm? If not, take a look at the 400 f5.6L also - it doesn't have IS but it will focus faster than the 300 f4 + TC.

Reviews of all 3 (100-400, 300+TC and 400) on photozone.de.

I used this combo for a while in 2010 before moving up to the 2.8 and got some decent results with it.

A few thoughts regarding the 300mm f/4L IS + 1.4x TC vs. 400mm f/5.6L...

The 300mm f/4L IS with 1.4x TC will provide quite a decent image ratio and will be able to focus from close-up to infinity. It will provide a far better image ratio than the 400mm f/5.6L: approximately 1:3 vs. 1:8.3. Note, the 300mm alone will give you a 1:4.2 image ratio.

The IS, although an older version, is still a viable aid to hand holding ths lens.

Both of these lenses are great in that they have built-in, retractable lens hoods. I wish that the Canon 70-200mm (series) lenses had built-in hoods.
