Pocketwizard + 7d + 430 II

I've recently bought a pocketwizard Plus II in the hope of being able to fire my 430 II speedlite remotely. I've attached the pocketwizard to the hotshoe on my 7d and have my speedlite on, i've tried all possible combo's but can't get any sign of firing of the flash. Can someone help me with what I have to do to get it to fire...

um, your 7D can fire speedlites remotely without any wireless transmitters. for pocketwizards, you need 2 units, one for camera, one for the flash.

Buy a second pocketwizard for the flash.

actually, his 430 ex II won't have a sync port for the pocket wizard (correct me if i'm wrong). in addition to a second PW, he'll need a sync port adapter.

Thanks for the reply, what settings does my 7d need to be set, i still can't make my 430 fire, just the onboard fires. i''ve played around with the flash control but no joy still...

Anyone want to buy a pocket wizard then!? I have a new unused one for sale it seems!

thanks for the help, got it firing wirelessly, only thing is the hotshoe flash still fires every time, is this just what I got to live with if i'm going to use the 7d as the master?

what mode do you have your camera in? if you don't want your pop-up flash to fire, it doesn't have to fire.

typically if you are shooting off-camera flash, you would want your camera in manual mode. if you are using any other modes such as automatic, program, aperture, your camera is going to expose for your image as if the flash doesn't exist, which may result in slow shutter speeds and over-exposed images.

Yes, but it's firing at low power which seems to have minimal impact on the exposure. This is how it sends information to the 430.

ah, I didn't know it was required to flash in order to control the off-camera flash. I don't have a camera that has those nice new features

Neither do I, but some people have posted pics of the effect (usually snapping a pic in the mirror).

return the pocketwizard plus II if you bought it new from a store. Since the Plus IIIs came out, prices for Plus II units are barely $100 since the new Plus IIIs are $139.

as far as using the 7D to remotely trigger your flash, you must still stay within your maximum flash sync speed, which I think is 1/250th of a second for the 7D. if you want to use your flash and achieve a faster shutter speed, you'll need to invest in either a long E-TTL cable, or invest in some E-TTL wireless triggers (Pocket Wizard Flex, Phottix Odins (I use these), or Pixel Kings).

Then maybe you should reserve your advise. There is enough erroneous info floating around the Internet already. I am not trying to be an a$$, but you help no one giving a person already having problem false info.
