I'd like some critique on a photo that I've just edited in Lightroom 3. I see so many family portrait photos that look awesome and want to improve my editing in Lightroom, and would like some ideas.

Straight out of camera, only converted from RAW to JPG in Lightroom.

Edited.

Link to RAW file (external link)if you care to give it a go and show me what I'm missing.

Looks really nice to me. WB looks nice, exposure looks nice. A very slight boost in contrast on the face might be needed but its hard for me to tell on my crappy work monitor.

Thanks. I'm not entirely proficient in Lightroom. How would I adjust the contrast only on his face and not the entire photo?

Im not sure you could do that quickly in lightroom. It would require the straighten and then fill in the grassy area with another tool. Much easier in PS. :D

You would use the adjustment brush tool

If this was my pic, I would have ended up with this. But I'm just an amateur, trying to figure this out too. I do love working in Lightroom though

Chris, do you mind sharing with me the edits you made in LR? It looks good!

I changed it to an 8X10 crop and rotated it a little bit
I used the adjustment brush on the eyes using the default iris enhancement settings
Set the temperature to 5793 and Tint to +5
Exposure +60
Blacks 8
brightness +47
contrast +31
sharpening 60
radius 1.3
noise reduction luminance 21

If I may throw my mix into the.. 'mix'.

sample_edit (external link) by photofirephotography (external link), on Flickr

Temp: 5678
Exposure: +.69
Brightness: +57
Clarity: -29
Vibrance: +20
General cropping to rid the photo of the red flag/label, pulled som red out in HSL Saturation (-27)
A little bit of post crop vignetting
Open current edit in PS
Zoom in and select both eyes with magnetic lasso tool set to feather 10px, tweak contrast and unsharp mask (only slightly so he doesnt look like a zombie)
Select Lasso tool with 120px feather and select area you want to highlight, reverse selection, gaussian blur +4.0., adjust curves.

This is a personal style, not how you 'should' do your edits, but I hope you don't mind. I was bored and waiting for my lens to get here so I can play with my own photos.

I should also mention, I didn't spend an exuberant amount of time on it, if I spent more time it might be a 'bit' cleaner

cheers

Thanks, don't mind at all. The different edits help me see different points of view in choosing how to do my own.
