This is a lightning strike that I captured with my mobile phone. I had to use the video mode. I was wondering, if I get the EOS 1100D, would that's video mode be suitable for capturing lightning? Or is the only option to leave it on wide angle and long exposure with a high f stop?

My photo is here.

A video frame grab is not very optimum for getting a lightening photograph due to the poor quality. Shooting long exposures is definitely preferred...but another way is to use a lightning trigger. They run anywhere from $125 for a knockoff to $350 for a name brand trigger.

Thanks for your replies. It was really bright and almost like staring at the sun, especially as it was at night! Playing back the video frame by frame, I noticed that the lightning was really going for the target several times!

Thanks for your advice Bryan. I will try the long exposure method before getting a lightning trigger. This is once I buy the camera. ;-)a
