I couldn't find reference to it here but is a firmware update to V2.0.3. necessary when I purchase the 580EX.

There's no reason not to apply the firmware update, I did it to one of my 20D's and it works the same as before. Professional wedding photographer, solution architect and general technical guy with multiple Amazon Web Services certifications.
