What is the proper way to allow a website to use an image of mine and yet retain my own copyright?

I don't want credit for the image and I don't want to stipulate that they must put my copyright near the image -- it seems wrong for the website to simply put their own copyright at the bottom of the page because I want to retain the rights to my image.

I guess I could stipulate that if somebody where to right click on the image, my copyright be displayed..

Thoughts?

You retain copyright to your photo regardless of whether a copyright symbol is displayed. Also, the website displaying a copyright symbol at the bottom of the page doesn't mean that they now own the copyright to your photo either. Most websites have a little "copyright 2012" or "All rights reserved" statement at the bottom of every page - they may or may not actually own the copyright of everything on their pages, but the statement doesn't change the fact of your ownership

You retain ownership of your image unless you specifically agree to give up your ownership of it.

The proper way is to have a contract.
Not verbal. Verba volant.

A written contract that says so.

Websites are just like printed materials in that respect. The magazine (or website) can hold the copyright of the organization and compilation of a group of works, yet all the individual authors continue to hold the copyrights of their individual works.

You don't need to have your copyright displayed. Just be sure to register the work.

A work becomes copyrighted when it is fixed* in a tangible medium of expression. After March 1, 1989 works no longer require a copyright notice (© or the word copyright, the author´s name and the year of publication). Copyright registration is also no longer required, but recommended to get the maximum damages awarded in court. However, it is wise to affix a copyright notice to works so that you can be found by someone who actually wants to pay you instead of just stealing the image. ;)

To allow a website to use an image and yet retain your copyright, you simply assign a "usage right" to them to use your image in a specific way, like only on their website.
