Hello All,

A newbie here, I recently bough an Canon XSi in "Like New Conditions" shutter count only 4,800. I bough the EF 28-135mm IS USM but I'm not happy with the sharpness of it considering how much it cost.

I really like the new 7D but I don't need 8 FPS or the HD Video features. With that said. It is worth to buy a such expensive lens (70-200) to use with my Rebel XSi?

I know the lens can make the difference but I need some advice from the Pros. I don't want to spend the money on the 7D to get the same results I get with XSi because if I buy the 7D, won't be able to afford the lens. Does the 70-200 can perform in the SXi as it would do on a better camera than the XSi?

I like to shoot, Pets, Nature, Macro, Landscapes, Long exposures, Night Photography, Buildings...etc

Either the lens or the 7D.

If you don't need the 8fps or the 19pt AF of the 7D, consider the 600D or the 60D instead. They share the same sensor and have roughly the same IQ (some say the 7D may even have lower IQ due to the strong AA filter, but I don't know if that is true)

Buy the lens. My first upgrade to my XSi kit was my 100-400L lens.

what do you like about the 7D that makes you want to switch...and you're not happy with the I.Q. of the 28-135mm because of how much it cost? that's one of the cheapest lenses you can get...since you're new to photography are you sure it's not you, and is the lens you are using...

also which 70-200mm are you considering?

I traded the 55-250 for my 70-200 and never looked back. you won't regret it. just the ability for the extra 2 stops of light on the 2.8 version makes it worth it. ESPECIALLY on a camera with more noise like your XSi.

You have great shots on your Site! Do you still shoot with the XSi?

considering the fact that you've had the camera for 2 weeks, and you just learned about aperture, shutter speed, ISO...i think you shouldn't buy anything for at least a couple months...

the fact that you're already thinking of going to the 7D scares me...

Ha ha I know I know,

I've been doing a lot of research and watch many videos for it. Don't worry I agree with you. I will learn as much as I can with what I have now. But I do want to get a better lens in the future. I just ordered a 50mm 1.8 II to start with :)

BTW I loved you photos!

Thanks, and yes I do, its been quite the little workhorse, starting to get a bit frayed around the edges though, so I will be upgrading once the next generation of crop cameras come out (that, and I want better AF).

I just realised that in my first reply I skipped over the part where you said you just got the XSi. Don't even think about upgrading unless you need video (which you have said you don't) or better AF, because you aren't going to see any difference in the results. At the moment, the limiting factor is not the gear, its the photographer, you'll know for sure once your gear starts limiting you, then it may be time to upgrade.

I bought my 70-200 f/4L IS for my XS. Created some great shots. Just didn't have the burst speed for fast sports/action though.

Either the lens or the 7D.

Stick with your XSi and learn how to use it properly. I have thought of getting the 70-200, but will be using my 55-250 for a while longer.

This pic was taken with the 55-250 on my 450D. Probably not as sharp as the 70-200, but good enough for me.

It is not often that a lens out-resolves a camera. Just slap that 70-200 on there: I'm sure you'll be amazed!

It is worth it if you need the lens. It all depends on what you want to shoot. I agree learn and use what you have. BUT if you definitely need the length, speed, and/or IQ now, well then you need it now. Few people need and mose people want. That is for you to decide.

If you don't need the lens and only want the lens, then IMHO it is only worth it if you can afford it without sacrifice to your quality if living.

Thanks for Reading & Good Luck - Jim
