I’m looking to pick up another light stand and was just curious to know what everyone else is using.

What do you plan on using this light stand with? Speedlite? Strobe?

I use Manfrotto's 1052BAC and 420b as well as LumoPro's LP605 for speedlites.

I have promaster LS2 (2 of them) and 4 of the Manfrotto small stands that came with my elinchrom kits. I prefer the LS2 for normal stands, but would be nice if they were air cushioned, not springs. I believe the LS3 might be air cushioned.

Speedlites on LumoPro's LUM5005 (8ft AC Stand). Basically, the old Strobist stuff sold from MPEX.

I have a couple of Manfrotto 1052BAC's. I really like that they fold flat and snap together for transport and storage. I want to get a couple more to use as background support.

I love big c stands, Matthews combo stands, and Matthews medium and high rollers. I also just got a Mole Richardson junior roller in a deal that is pretty nifty. All these stands are expensive and must be used carefully to avoid expensive accidents but they will allow you to put anything practically anywhere.

If you get a c stand I urge you to get The Grip Book to learn to properly use it. They are called century stands because it takes a century to learn to properly use one. If you don't set it right it will fall and hurt someone. I have been getting the avengers from amazon with free prime shipping. They are bigger than the Matthews c stands.

As of today a Manfrotto 1004BAC.
I got a little worried about the weight of my new 1200RX and instead of using a no name light stand which I have and have used with speedlites I chose to get that one.
That it reaches 3.66 meters was also a deciding factor.

It was more then i wanted to spend in total but i'm happy with it and i love the way the legs fold up.

You did not mention for what kind of lights (speedlights or studio flash) but what I use for my speedlight is a lightweight Bogen (sorry forgot the model#) For my Speedotron I use Manfrotto Alu Master 3 Riser 12' AC Stand. I love them as they are very stable, evem with fairly large softboxes, after a few smashed fingers I really like the air cushion feature and they nest together nicely when folded for storing.

Best, Bruce

Anythiny special we should know. Rented couple of times, seemed pretty easy to use.

Lots of things.

1. Knuckle always on the right of the hanging weight. Righty tighty, lefty loosey. I have seen young grips get yelled at on set for breaking this rule. Bill Clinton was once whacked in the head from a c stand that had the knuckle on the wrong side and loosened.

2. Tall leg points towards the weight if you are hanging something off the arm.

3. Sandbag goes on the tall leg. Never let the sandbag touch the floor. If its a big sandbag you can wrap it around the shaft of the stand.

4. Put tennis balls on the feet of the stand if in someone's house.

5. When putting the stand away line up all the knuckles and tighten them all. Nothing is more annoying then picking up a stand and a shaft goes flying out.

6. Never leave the arm pointed out at eye level with nothing on it. Someone will run into it. If you must, put a tennis ball over it.

7. When carrying a stand and you approach a corner or a doorway or you need to carry it through a bunch of people yell Hot points! Hot points! so you don't whack someone with the stand.

Those are the most common mistakes I see grips and assistants make.

My one and only Impact 8' air cushioned (external link).
It does the job, but I'll definitely be investing in better soon enough. It feels flimsy when extended all the way with a 43" umbrella on it.
