To stay or not to stay (with Canon)... that is the question.

This doesn't make sense now. You claim to have done photography for a number of years as a student and passed and graduated from a film school.

Surely you would know the answer is the photographer?

That was just reaction to Tom Reichner.
Yes, I was talking about photographers, Nikon users in particular. Again, just my imho, nothing more.
I mean, wouldn't 1Dx users take better pictures? Because average 1Dx user has way more experience then average 1100D user... yet you can do amazing things with 1100D and 1Dx will almost certainly suck in the hands of an unexperienced photographer.

Maybe average Nikon user is just more experienced... or maybe it's just me...

Sorry about your equipment that is gone. Did the insurance cover the money spent on it, or the replacement value? As stated above by MJ, you do not need justification for what you do. It is not the equipment, contrary to what some people think, but the person behind it. Buy what you want.

Nope, wasn't insured... I went to the cops and they said there is nothing they can do about it (to busy giving out parking tickets I guess).

Actually, justification is exactly what I need :p Maybe I should rent a Nikon for couple of days.

To be honest, I also think a lot about this. Let me first tell you that I'm a "Canon Lover". I've had 3 Canon printers (i560, MP450 and MF8030Cn) and a compact (Powershot A40) before buying myself an EOS 550D. I bought the 550D because of the good review on dpreview and it felt nice when I held it in my hands. So far I have following equipment for my EOS 550D: EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 IS, EF 50mm F/1.8 II, EF 70-200mm F/4L IS USM (no other brand has an alternative for this magnificent lens), Speedlite 580EX II and RS-60E3.

I don't have any affinity for the brand Sony and only a little bit of affinity for the brand Nikon. However it seems that Nikon beats the cr*p out of Canon when it comes down to the following aspects:

- Flash photography
- High ISO performance (especially with entry level / APS-C DSLR's)
- Shadow quality at base ISO
- Dynamic Range (example 1 (external link), example 2 (external link))
- Light Metering

After looking at the aspects above, I just feel like I've bought inferior(/bad) material. Makes me feel sad and down sometimes. I find it really sad that even a Nikon D5100 has a better Dynamic Range than a 5D Mark II. It's not that Nikon is a much better company than Canon. It just "steals" the superior Sony Exmor sensor giving it a huge edge over Canon. On one hand I want to stay with Canon because I have a lot of affinity for them and hope that they will release an entry-level DSLR within 1-2 years which is on par with or superior to entry-level DSLR's from other brands regarding the aspects above. On the other hand I'm rather pessimistic and think it won't happen because Canon sales are still great and I should sell my gear to get a Nikon DSLR.

In regards to high ISO, if you know how to handle the 7D settings and post processing, you can get quite decent high ISO images out of it. I have no experience with the D7000, so I won't speak to it. I have seen good high ISO shots out of it, but also have seen poor shots out of it.

Mate of mine bought a D5100, and I found it to be a frustrating camera to use, in comparison to my 550D. Quite a few things have to be accessed through menus rather than directly with a button, and it doesn't seem to be very intuitive. To me anyway. Go try one, (a Nikon) and see if you like it. In real life, you won't see a scrap of difference in image quality. It's all down to ergonomics and usability. Whatever fits, buy.

Popcorn anyone?...

...and a Coke. This could be an all nighter.;)

Let me tell you how I solved the problem of the larger Nikon sensor. I like to take panoramas, and for about $150, bought a nodal bar from RRS, and a 50mm 1.4 lens for $800 (which I wanted anyway...much sharper than my 24-105@50mm). I set the camera in portrait mode on the tripod and take four shots. With overlap, I get an incredible 55GB photo...65GB if I take another shot or so.

Time spent is a few seconds more than with my 16-35, and there's no distance distortion for far objects. It's a billboard in the making.

There. I've solved the only issue in which I think the 800 is superior to the 5D3. And how often do you really need such a large photo anyway?

I've experienced nothing but good things since I started with Canon, from purchase to service. And I know that the next iteration of a Canon body will be with a bigger chip, and it's just stupid for me to sell tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment and take a few thousand dollar loss to drink the Nikon Koolaid. Also, most of the reviews in the field of equivalent Nikons and Canons give the edge to the latter.

Of course, I've been doing this for a while, have seen the leapfrogging of Nikon and Canon and am content. The OP is starting out anew because of the loss of his equipment. Perhaps he should rent an equivalent Canon and Nikon body for a few days and evaluate them both.

You seem to be trying to make a decision on status quo, emotions, and pure crap that's not quantifiable. You seem to be falling into the Nikon are elitist mentality.

How about we treat this like any other "what should I get" thread?
-what body has ergonomics/button layout that you like?
-what body has the features you need?
-how do you feel about the lens selection and price?

It's silly to think that you can't take a professional shot with either Nikon or Canon. IQ with either brand is excellent. In fact, a mid to upper end camera has the ability to take a picture better than you have the ability to shoot. :p

Hey, new member here.

I'm a young (24) photographer from Belgium. Did photography for couple of years, also graduated from a film/TV school, so I guess that helps also.
Unfortunately, my whole Canon setup got stolen about a year ago (approx 3000 euro worth of equipment) Man do I miss photography, but I just couldn't afford new gear.
Anyway, life goes on, no point in dwelling in the past, so I was thinking about getting a new camera and stuff.

I have hard time figuring what camera to buy!
It's basically D7000 vs 7D for me (because 7D is kinda old, you can buy it for the same price on ebay). I must say that 7D just feels like a better camera, a real beast, I also like Canon lenses more. D7000 wins in image quality on higher ISO though.
I also like that you can mount pretty much any lens on EOS with an adapter, while you can't do it on Nikon.

Yet, Nikon shooters some how make better pictures! Somehow... I'm very temped by this Nikon fan club of elitists, it's kinda irrational, I don't like that...

What would you do if your kit would have been stolen? What would be a good reason to go over to Nikon? Or stay with Canon?

I specifically asked this question on Canon forum, because I don't want to start yet an other useless Canon vs Nikon post. (I'll do the same on Nikon forum)

I faced myself with the same choice a while back
in the end the iso issue was just not that important nor have I at anytinme thought damn had I gotten the d7000 it would be better

with that said...I held them side by side and my mind was made up in a nano second

love the 7D

You may say I'm a Zoomer, But I'm not the only one

Let us know what you think after rentling a N*k*n. It should answer your question. Sorry that I do not spell N*k*n. My wife likes their stuff better than Canon. Double the lenses. Double the bodies. Double the expense and fun.

No. Not brave. Over thirty (30) years of marriage, and gray hair, I learned that even if she is wrong, she is right. That is why, in her mind, she is the better half.
