I'll add tor Rick's comment and say that you've framed the whole scene perfectly.

Thank you for all the great comments. I'm trying to add patience to my equipment list and this shot was the result of my first serious try - waited nearly half an hour for this shot which is not much I would suspect.

I'd lend you some but I seem to run out quite frequently myself. :)

Great shot, Dave; you were very fortunate to get an unobstructed view.

Dave beautiful image of this bird in breeding plumage. I'm still looking to get a keeper photograph of this species.

I've found that the older I get the shallower that well is.

Thank you - I certainly was fortunate to be at the right place when he popped out.

Thank you, I got my first bittern in 2010. I had never seen one before that and had to look it up to name it. Never saw another all that year. Didn't see one all last year. This year they seem to be all over the place. There were 6 of them in mating plumage at our northern refuge, all in one small area. There were 3 or 4 of them in the weeds around this guy at the refuge closest to our home. I still find them very tough to spot but their call is distinctive and at least lets me know they are around.

I don't mean to ramble here but...one of the other photographers I met on the trail pulled out his smart phone while we were waiting to see one of these. He had an app called iBird? He played the bittern's call and two of them popped up out of the grasses almost immediately. I'm looking into an iPod now.
