Something I've noticed when doing my editing and polishing of shots, more often than not I boost exposure by up to 1/3 stop. So much so I'm considering setting the camera to +1/3. Any thoughts?

According to the principles HAMSTTR/ETTR that's the way to do it. Theoretically if you are looking to maximize image quality, you will get your best results by slightly overexposing and pulling back in post, due to how the sensor works. I haven't done scientific tests myself, but I've tried it and never seen any ill effects from it, provided that the RAW file itself is not actually blown out.

It's certainly true that if you underexpose and push it up in post, you will see more noise in the shadows. So all else being equal I'd rather my images be a bit on the bright side rather than the dark side.

I also usually go with about a +1/3 exposure setting, shooting in manual the majority of the time, and still sometimes find the shot a bit on the dark side for my liking. It depends on the shot of course, and sometimes I go with a +2/3 and check the histogram. Always a good idea to check the histogram in camera and reshoot if necessary or questionable.

I shoot 95% Aperture Priority with +2/3 exposure. It provides a much better starting point for me in post processing.

Cheers for the replies. I will go +1/3 stop and keep my eye on the histogram highlights

Oh Wow Patrick! That one's AWESOME! I'd like a large print of that, tell me what it'd take to get a large file or a print from you.

You ever have a bad day where you went out to shoot with a single purpose in mind, then blew the shots? I have a 20x28 picture from some 22 years ago of my firstborn son in a firefighters coat and hat. We lost him 7 years ago ...a month before his 18th birthday. My last child now turns 5 day after tomorrow and we set out to get a shot of him in a firefighter's coat and hat to show him in a similar setting...he looks remarkably like his big brother. I'm drugged for nerve problems and simply did not check my settings...blew the shots by 2.85 over exposed! Didn't check the ISO which was at 800 in semi bright light and using a flash. Daniel's face is too hot to see any detail when I bring it down in Lightroom, so this is the only shot I got, sans Daniel, that's worth anything.

Sometimes I can't stand myself! :(

Thanks JJ, excellent idea! I feel a little better about it now, but will still try again another day, when I don't have to get us all out in the rain.

I think Chad was about 3 in this picture, and Daniel will be 5 on Monday. Chad was always very big for his age...6' at 12 yrs old...and Daniel is quite small for his. But they look so much alike that my Dad, my Brother and Sister, even my Bro-in-Law...all find themselves trying to call Daniel "Chad". And some of Daniels behaviour is so reminiscent of Chad that I get frustrated and almost call him the wrong name myself! lol

Mary is going to try and get a friend who is a firefighter to bring his jacket and helmet to the church where Chad's picture was taken and duplicate the old shot as near as possible, might even have to blur it down some to make them seem from the same time frame. Anyhoo, thanks again JJ for the b&w idea...helped out a lot! :)

Hey guys!
Just joined the ranks of this thread getting my first 1Ds body ever, the Mark II...so far? LOVE it! :)

Only issue? personal functions. I would like to be able to use some of these(especially the 5-7 bracketed shots) but it seems that it is only possible to set the P.Fnc's using EOS Utility..is that true?(it must be cause it doesnt work in camera..you can only register/apply,etc as far as I can tell)

I dont have the firewire cable, it wasnt included in the sale..
but I have also heard the FireWire-USB adapters are kinda dodgy at best...not to mention every PC I own has Win7 on it..and I hear it will only work with XP and older..?

What to do? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hopefully will have something to post in this thread soon!
I traded 'down' from my 5D2 to a 1DsII and so far, dont regret it at all...yea the higher ISO performance is not as good as the 5D2, but being a 90% studio camera, I dont see why that would/will matter anyways.. ;)
Cheers!!
