I use the 100-400 on 1 series bodies with no problem. I use that for car races and its very versatile. I've often used the same combination with the 1.4 TC but not for action shots as you only have the center point available for auto focus. I avoid using the 2x converters as there will be some loss of quality.

1DX MK II, 5D MKIV x2, 24L II, 35L II, 50L, 85LIS, 100LIS Macro, 135L, 16-35LIS, 24-105LIS II, 70-200LIS, 100-400LIS II

Jay (crosswind images/flying photog) has some stellar shots with those primes listed and extenders. Also air butchie, and patrickf117 use them as well. Check out the 1d mk III thread, that is where most of thos guys post their shots. https://photography-on-the.net …ead.php?t=333015&page=119

Thanks for that, every little bit helps.
I don't doubt that the 100-400mm L IS is going to work on the 1DmkIV, but I was hoping to heart that I was wrong when it came to an extender for action shots. :)
Really, I do realize that the mkIV is not magic, but it is a step above my T2i, and I know that 'my' photography skills are what is needed, but I need the sharpness to get where I feel I need to be.

Thank you for the your reply. :)

I am more than familiar with the guys that you mentioned, but if I remember right, they 'may have' the lenses that are faster, and faster costs more. :)
Those guys have skills/talents that dwarf mine too, and that helps them, but doesn't help me. heheheh

I am going to definitely read the links you sent though, I may have already seen them, but not with the way I need to see them now, with the stuff I am planning/hoping to buy, that might hit home more today.

Thank you for taking the time to help me out.

It sure does Patrick, that is really helpful, that is what I needed.

That shows me that I can't afford the 400mm f/2.8, which I'd like to have, and I mean, really, REALLY like to have.
It also shows me that I could get clean, sharp shots of action (if I am good enough, that is) from the 300mm f/4, with a extender, that is one of the ones I was wondering about, so that helps a LOT!
I've even considered the 70-200 F/2.8L
too, it'd be nice to have, but I'll have to wait and see about it, I hear it's sharp, but really won't have the reach I want, even with an extender.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, that really did help, it's getting there, I mean, what I need to know is kind'a seeping in, well, a little. heheh

The 300mm F2.8 IS is another awesome combo with extenders. You might be able to pick up one used and save a little cash. I use mine all the time. It is outstanding!

Oh, I would, if I could, but it's one of those that is kind'a 'out there' for me right now, at least, I think...
Any 'fast' lens is out of my price range, well, the one I 'need to be' in anyway.

Out of ALL of the lenses I am considering, they will definitely be used, I can't afford new on most. Even the used have gone way up in the last couple of years it appears. I may even buy the camera used, I'm not opposed to it at all, as long as it has low actuations.

Thanks for your help on this! :)

I've used the 400/5.6L with a 1.4x MkII on a 1D3 and 1D4. It worked fine and autofocus was quick. I discovered I shake too much for it to be particularly useful to me, unless it was on a tripod.
The 300/4L + 1.4x Mk II worked fine - I tested it for sharpness... not as good as the 400/5.6 but not bad either.
I currently use a 400/4DO + 1.4x Mk III on a 1D4. I'm trying to learn budgie-photography (and mostly failing.) The lens combination is sharp and provided you're not shooting direcly into the sun, the contrast is fine.

Several cameras and more glass than I will admit to.

No problem! And they got to where they are by shooting all the time, just like everyone else who is serious about photography should be.

No problem! I had not realized until I saw your Flickr moments ago that you use a non is 70-200 and the 300 f4, really opens my eyes to not needed is on the 70-200. Makes me want/be able to afford a 70-200 that much more. Haha

My preferred long lens "walking around" setup is the 300mm f/2.8L IS + 1.4X TC

My boat anchor is the 500mm f/4L IS

Well, maybe that is something that I might have to do, is go your way with the 400/5.6L with a 1.4x MkIII, (if the 1.4x MkIII is compatible with the 400/5.6L... That's something to think about)

Just from reading this, I am thinking I will not be able to get a DO anything, they sound high, and I don't even know what a DO is, or does... heheh

Good luck on your budgie shoots, whatever that entails, it sounds odd, can you tell me more about it? I see you're in Canada, so the budgie part kind of throws me. :)

Thank you for taking the time to help me out.:)

Yeah, I guess so, they deserve it, we all get good at something, I guess, I'm O.K., just not in a caliber with those guys.

Thanks again!

Jay,

I could do the 300mm f/2.8L IS + 1.4X TC if I had to, I just don't want to, I'll never be a pro, and I'm not aspiring to be either, I just want quality. :)
That is a pretty inexpensive route to go, after reading the pricing on the BIG lenses, well, if anyone has them, only Adorama does, as far as I can see, and I ain't payin' $10,000., my wife says so! heheh

I'd love to have your boat anchor, I'll trade you my soon-to-be classic truck for it...
("Soon-to-be classic" just really means old, I know you know) :D

Thanks for the reply Jay, I appreciate that, and I am going to actually listen to y'all and see what develops out of all of this, so it's not in vain.

I have a 1D MKII and when I had the 100-400mm it paired very well with the Kenko 1.4 telecon. I since sold the the 100-400mm and use a 400mm 5.6 w/the same body/telecon and like it very much. Sunny days are necessary starting at f8 and the AF works well for what I'm shooting.
