this seems like it should be the simplest task, but for some reason the only keywords that end up in my files are the ones that are there during initial import.

why can't i select a range of photos from the bottom of the 'filmstrip', type in the keywards in the 'Click here to add keywords box,' and then hit return and have all that metadata written to the file?

when i do this, only one photo of all the selected ones captures the keywords. the photo itself has a whiter border as compared to the slightly grayer ones, despite using the 'select all' menu option and the bar saying '1154 photos/1154 selected' in this particular case.

i've got to be doing something wrong here but can't figure it out...maddening!

Make sure Auto Sync is selected in the bottom box and not Sync.

Having previously used Photoshop Elements Organiser I must say I am hating LR's tagging.
PSE images have a tag icon (when they have been tagged)
LR4 images have a tag icon (when they have been tagged)

PSE mouse over the tag icon on the image and it displays the tags applied to the image.
LR4 mouse over the tag icon and it informs you "the image has tags" - no **** Sherlock.

PSE also allows you to delete any of the individual tags with the mouse from the image/tag icon itself. LR4 requires you to click on the icon to display the tags in the side bar, then delete them from the side bar.

To keyword groups of photos - i think you need to be in the grid view.

Just select them in the grid view and you can tag as many at once as you like.
