I got my first skipper on Sunday. There are also 100s of lovely mauve ones about at the mo, but they never stop moving.

Did a fair bit of editing on this one as the wings got a bit blown out by the flash.

like the composition, and i like the background, what time of day was it taken?, they look like they would be good insects to run around after.

Thanks! Believe it or not, the shot was taken around midday in full bright sunlight! F22 and the flash all but kills the natural light...

Thanks Brian. I liked this one the best of those I took. The others either had an OOF bloom or an OOF leaf in the BG.

Are you sure that it's a skipper? Regardless, you did a good job. I really like the composition and the bud adds some really pretty color to the shot!

Thanks for the kind words Tammie.

WRT the ID, I based it purely on the behaviour of these little guys - the skipping around, the vigourous defence of territory and the color. I hauled the book out, and see that the skipper wings are nowhere near as upright as the guy I've shown. I have probably misidentified this one, but will check with the gurus when the new academic year starts next year (everyone's away already). A possibility is Theclinae, but I have very little detail available in my bug book - only a rather vague line drawing (and there's thousands of species of these as well). I'll PM you when I find out.
