Here are four woodpecker species that I photographed during my trip. I had photographed the Hoffman's in 2009 but it was very distant. The other three were life list additions for me.

1. Male Hoffman's Woodpecker - Hotel Bougainvillea, Santo Domingo

IMAGE: http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s219/Squidcan/Costa%20Rican%20Birds/HoffmansWoodpecker_01.jpg

2. Pale-billed Woodpecker (Extremely steep angle and very backlit) - Arenal Observatory Lodge

IMAGE: http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s219/Squidcan/Costa%20Rican%20Birds/Pale-billedWoodpecker_01.jpg

3. Black-cheeked Woodpecker - La Fortuna, near Arenal Volcano

IMAGE: http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s219/Squidcan/Costa%20Rican%20Birds/Blackcheekedwoodpecker_01.jpg

4. Lineated Woodpecker (Like the pale-billed similar in shape and size to our Pileated Woodpecker) - Arenal Observatory Lodge

Man-oh-man Stephen. Incredible species to add to your collection. The Lineated is just amazing. It's getting harder to post the North American species these days with all the beautiful southern hemisphere varieties being shown here lately. Great stuff, can't wait to see more.

Thanks Steve. I spotted the Lineated flying down a hillside and it landed on the tree trunk for a very short time. I managed about 4 shots before is dropped down below my line of sight. This was my best shot.

Nice shots, especially the lineated, well done. Carrying that 500 in the heat and humidity takes dedication.

Thank you Paul. It wasn't too humid where I took these but Tortuguero National Park was another thing.

You have some beauties here. I love to see exotic woodpeckers and it must be exciting to run across them. Great job.
