I just took this 5 minutes ago
I think I should be able to get more detail. I have tried many settings and I cannot improve.
Any help would be appreciated.
I am trying to get this down for the May 20th annular eclipse

I used a
Canon 5DIII
Canon 400mm f/2.8L + 1.4xIII converter
f/13
1/250 sec
ISO: 100

It looks good to me. What sort of solar filter are you using?

Haven't tried the sun yet but will soon. But that looks pretty good to me too. The more yo take, the more you'll learn. Keep at it.

Looks good to me too! Well done! More detail will probably depend on the "seeing", ie atmospheric stability. I'd certainly be happy with what you've got. Reckon you're ready for the Venus transit

Leonard. There's NOTHING WRONG with this picture at all.
If you want "more detail" use the likes of a 3-6-inch telescope. For what you have used this is quite a good result.

A little bit of PP would help just a bit. I tried Photoshop's Auto Levels on your image. Give that a try.

I am trying to get more detail from the sun spots. I have seen much better on this forum with roughly the same equipment.

Here is a link to the raw file

Apologies - you HAVE got such a telescope.
Will out your raw file. In the posted jpeg I can see three shades of detail in the sunspot, and is that a hint of solar granulation? (or just pixels???)
Am.

PS: How about a larger aperture? The lens specs look pretty good for that. Can you get a lower ISO on the 5D-3.
From your EXIF:
Date Time Original 2012:05:14 13:59:09
Exposure Time 1/250
F Number f / 13

You might try close to wide open for higher resolution and ISO50 and maybe about 1/2000sec.

Leonard
I saw an earlier post where the shooter was using a 10 stop filter for his sun.

My question is - will it not be easier the day of the eclipse, as the moon will be blocking some of the light?

just a few of my thoughts...

Leonard. I downloaded the CR2 and converted it to DNG. Using CS6 I got some detail, but still working on it. These later shots look better than your first. Try as wide as you can go. The higher shutter speed will help reduce any motion blur. Any change of a CR2 at a much wider aperture?
Am.

Exactly what kind of detail are you trying to get ? If your trying to get sun texture detail then with a camera and lens you can forget that . The only thing you can get actual detail of the sun surface will have to be with a Solar Telescope . Most you will get with a camera and lens will be the Sun disk and whatever sunspots are showing at the time .
