I've currently got a Canon 400D and considering upgrading to the 60D. The 60D has been out for a while so should I wait for replacement or just bite the bullet and go for it. The 60D is available for $900 right now which seems like a good price for the camera.
The other option is a Nikon D7000.. I am probably going to sell the majority of my Canon kit so now could be a good time to swap to Nikon if I'm going to do it, but I think I have my heart set on the Canon 70-200 IS f.4 L lens which is why I am swaying back towards the Canon.. There is also $100 off this lens if I buy the 60D right now which is nice.
My other option is to buy the 70-200 IS f4 and use it with my 400D until the replacement for the 60D comes out.
Thoughts and insight greatly apprechiated :-)

I am impatient. Who knows how long a new 60d replacement will be and even then I don't like buying first run models until all the kinks are out. I say go buy a 60d now and get shooting.

As for the Nikon I say go try one out if you can. Personally, I shot with a d700 for a couple weeks and I just couldn't get used to it. The button layout was weird and it just felt wrong in my hands. Who knows you might have the opposite reaction and feel like its something that's been missing all along.

I don't see them replacing the 60D really soon...maybe another year. A 7D upgrade/update would come first. They just released an astronomical 60D about a month or so ago.. the 60Da, which leads me to believe that they are going to stay with the current incarnation for awhile. Keep in mind, if they were to "update" the 60D, it's price would almost certainly jump back up over the $1000 mark. The only thing i can imagine them doing to the 60D at this point, would be to add MFA..which i don't think they will, as the provides product-separation between it and the 7D.

If you're going to stick with Canon, you may as well grab one now.

Are you in the US? Purchase through Canon Loyalty Program ($640 plus tax). You would need an old canon camera ($10 on eBay) to get that price.

Then when a new camera comes out you can sell the 60D with little to no loss and upgrade at that point. If you are more frugal you could keep the 60D until it's replacement becomes available through the Canon Loualty Program.

I can't comment on whether you should wait for the "70D" or not, It could be available next month, or in 6 months or more. If it comes out next month perhaps you'll be kicking yourself for not waiting. Its a horse race. The same is true for the D7000 which has been out a while. My feeling is that life is fleeting and I personally don't want to be constantly waiting for new and improved things that are still somewhere around the corner. But that's me,

Now with regard to the 60D vs the D7000, that's a different set of questions. Last time I looked, the D7000 was a few hundred dollars more so that can be an issue to some. There is much to like in each camera. The Nikon has some very desirable features that the Canon lacks, but Canon's menuing system, and some other features, are better than Nikon's, IMHO. Rather than compare the two cameras spec by spec, I suggest going to a shop and playing with both. Especially check out the feel of the body in your hand and the button arrangement. After all, you're more likely to use a camera if it feels good in the hand and is enjoyable to use. For me I quickly realized the 60D was more comfortable to use and I preferred the arrangement of the controls. While I don't have big hands, I found the D7000 body to be a bit cramped.

It looks like Nikon is actively refreshing their lineup, so I would expect Canon to not be too far behind. The new D3200 is 24mp, so even though WE know that MP isn't everything, it is what the average consumer looks at. I'm not sure how much longer the D5100, D7000 etc. will stick around with their current spec. Also it appears that a D600 may get released as a FF camera at a rumored $1500 price point. Something to consider if you're contemplating Nikon.

Personally I would either purchase through the loytal program for $640 or wait for a deal on the 7D such as the one Adorama ran a few weeks ago at $1199. If you get the body at a good discount (like either of the two listed above) you may be able to sell it with only a small loss if a 70D is released and you feel the need to upgrade.

Yes I am in the US - recently moved over here from the UK.
Are the Cameras on the Loyalty program refurbished or brand new? Is there a web link for the program or do I need to call Canon?
Its $640 plus tax, whereas its $800 at B&H and then I get a further $100 off the 70-200 lens which I'm not sure I qualify for if I use the loyalty program so about the same price for the complete package I am looking for.

I actually thought the 60D was quite wide when I first held it (quite a gap between the lens and the side grip) & that the grip on the Nikon D700 was very square and strange.. After a while I found both seemed OK - so just thought I would get used to either. The price point of the Nikon is an issue, but I like (on paper) the fact the video can change focus - although I am not sure how much I will use it. People I have spoken to say this would certainly be a plus and mean they would actually use it.

OK found the info re the CLP here - http://www.overclock.net …faqs-originally-from-potn (external link)
I guess its on POTN somewhere but google found that link...
Anyway as thats refurbished and I also need to pay tax it makes the offer from B&H seem better. I don't know why I just like the idea that my kits is brand new and hasn't been used. Plus its not that much cheper if I get the Lens..

considering switching to the dark side since you will be selling everything. I'd pick the D3200 over 60D since it's cheaper and the Sony 24MP Exmor is miles ahead of 60D's 3 yr old 18MP sensor.

That link you provided for the CLP is dated March 2011. Give the CLP people a call, mention the lens you want and see what they can do for you. It so happens the 70-200mm L is shown available as a refurb at $1160 (http://shop.usa.canon.com …gory_10051_10051_-1_22751 (external link)). Never hurts to ask about a deal.

I can't imagine the taxes or lack of (with B&H) making the overall deal better using B&H. $800-$640 = $160 but you save $100 on the lens through B&H. Still $60 in your favor with the CLP. Yes, refurb, but my 60D had about 45 shutter actuations and could not tell it from new. 14-day exchange, 90-day warranty.

Also, make sure you know what you are getting...a quick check of B&H at http://www.bhphotovideo.com …_EOS_60D_DSLR_Camera.html (external link) shows the 60D body, after a $100 rebate at $899, not $800.

Correct. If I also order the 70-200 f/4 lens then I receive an extra $100 off, so was comparing the complete package, i.e. 60D body plus 70-200 f/4 IS USM lens, Obviously if I also get the refurb 70-200 then that may weigh in favour of the CLP.

Here is the link for CLP https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=948785.

Get over having to have brand new... Purchase refurbished on this round then go new when the next model comes out.

Thanks for the link dachness

Just confirmed the refurb 60D is $639.99 on the CLP program. They said I could use my very old Canon PowerShot A70 3.2MP as its out of service.
The 70-200 f4 L is not available through the CLP - just the usual refurb scheme.
