Hey Guys!

Just received my new 50mm 1.8 on the mail and needed to test it! This is my first flower shot. Let me know what you think :)

I realized after the shot that the ISO was on 1600. :(

I like that the light, but it would have probably turned out better with some more depth and a tripod. F2 at that distance is pretty shallow and stopping down further would have made it very difficult to hand hold.

Yes, there is the urge when one gets a wide aperture lens to open it wide every time all the time. When you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail. One should resist the urge and set the aperture to what makes sense for the subject. It looks to me like you got focus on the tip of one of the petals. It needs more. One other thing: if you look at your RBG histogram, you will see that your red channel is pegged all the way to the right. Your reds are, therefore, clipped, causing lost of detail. I sound like a broken record to myself when I keep saying this. But it keeps happening. When you have a dominating color in an image, you need to expose for it and forget what your meter tells you.

When you guys say more Dept of Field, those that mean I need to show more of the back ground? That more part of the image should be in focus? Maybe a smaller aperture?

You want blur in the background in order to aid in the separation from the subject. You just don't want blur in most of the subject too.

Is this better? I used the tripod and added DOF :)

It's much better and it looks like you have a good exposure in the reds.

Much better. But I'll wager that your reds are still clipped. Not as bad as the first. There's a lack of detail in the petals at the top of the frame.
