any macro tips?

I need to take some close-up shots
of jewelry,coins to up to a web catolog.

Looking for tips on setting up the shot (lighting etc)
that will give me decent shots without having
to spend a bundle on studio equipment.
(my camera has macro capability)

Any tips would be appreciated

An easy solution is to make box out of white foam board.

The box should have a bottom, three sides and no lid.

Make it large enough that when shooting only the box will be in the picture,. with the product in the center.

Once you have this box you can also experiment with solid colored nonreflective fabrics draped in the box to give a more rich background than white. This will dramatically change the lighting though.

I'll let someone else handle the lighting aspect,. as I have no experienc ewith studio light. But if you are on a real budget,. you could start with a bunch of metal reflector cliplights for $7.00 or $8.00 a piece at hme depot, and some way to bounce the light (more white foamboard)
