Looking for a solution to my problem here. I have a Paul C Buff ABR800 ring flash that works well with our 5D II in landscape but in portrait we have a bit of a problem. The ring flash is a bit heavy and with our current tripod and head combo it pulls the camera down. The head will actually hold a 70-200 IS up fine in portrait but it struggles with this combo if we tried to just turn it to a portrait config. Now I know the answer that many will say is to invest in a new ballhead, but that's not in the cards. My boss and procurement staff don't get it and they're already on edge after the 4K in equipment we just bought. Needless to say, I'm not getting that approved in the short term.

That being what it is, the L-bracket came up as a solution: Cheaper in most cases; will be a more solid mount (this isn't on-the-fly photography stuff where bust out the ringflash, so time swapping or setting it up is not an issue); and also for my political purposes at work, is not another tripod or head...it's another "accessory" that I could possibly even petty cash (which is much easier to deal with than procurement).

So again, I know a new head may be in my beg-list but for now, I'm having trouble finding an L-bracket that has a screw (or screw hole) on both planes of the bracket. Yes, I know effectively that's not needed when you get an L-bracket since the bracket is attached to the other plane.

So...are there any L-brackets like I describe? Here's a link to the product so you can see how it has a specific kind of bracket with specific requirements. or maybe there's something about this kit that I'm missing that would allow me to mount it differently.

oh, and it's II or III since we have both and we could live with one or the other for portrait if necessary for the time being.

If you can read this, you don't need a macro | 7D + 5DIII + Waaaay too much spent....

I'm a bit confused about how you're using your camera in portrait mode with the ABR800. Are you saying you're tilting the actual ABR800 unit instead of the camera itself?

When I use my 70-200 in the ABR800 and I want to shoot portrait, I just rotate the camera via the lens collar (see: http://www.ocabj.net/?p=1716 (external link)).

I have two of the ABR plates, one rigged with a Manfrotto QR clamp and one rigged with a Kirk (Arca-Swiss style) clamp so I can easily mount a camera into the ABR800 with either an RC2 or Arca-Swiss style plate.

If I want to use a lens other than my 70-200 and in portrait, I can use the ABR+Arca_Swiss plate along with a L-plate:

hmm, see that's what I mean -- I'm probably missing something. Let me go look at it again.

Oh, well, then get yourself an L-plate and an Arca-Swiss style clamp with 1/4-20 threads so you can put it on the ABR800's plate.

I use the Kirk Enterprises QRC-2 universal plate: http://www.kirkphoto.com/2_in_Quick_Release_Clamp.html (external link)

I think I know where I went wrong. This is what you have that I don't: Manfrotto QR clamp or Kirk (Arca-Swiss style) clamp. Don't know why I didn't think about just adding that...sometimes it's the simple things.

Good point. Stick with the defacto standard Arca-Swiss clamp/plate idea if at all possible to get the max benefit out of the investments. Personally I try to even stay with one vendor, RRS, to make sure there are minimum problems using various clamps, plates, rails...etc.
