Battery Problem

I have a 60D with a Meike battery grip. Is has worked good, however, on 2 separate occasions something strange has happened with my batteries. I have 1 OEM Canon battery and 1 3rd party battery. Last night I went shooting with 2 batteries that were pretty much 100% charged. I got to location and turned the camera on. The battery level showed 100%. I turned off the camera and waited for the sun to set. As the sun set got closer I turned back on the camera and my battery level indicator was blinking like it had 0% charge. When I got home I took out the batteries and put them in the charger. They showed 100% charge. I put them back in the battery grip and turned on the camera, it showed 100% charge. Has anybody ever had this happen.

That's the problem with cheap grips. They have cheap wiring in them.

I have the same grip and am encountering the same problems. Sometimes I switch on and no power. It's a bummer but I only paid $17 for it through Amazon.

That's weird. I have 3 off brand batteries (Wasabi) and never had any issues. I don't use a battery grip though.

I've had this on 3 different cameras, all with official Canon grips. Sometimes with Canon batteries, sometimes with off-brand (3 different makes). The solution in each case has been to clean the contacts on the battery grip (the bit which goes up inside the camera), and make sure that the grip is screwed tightly (as tight as you can reasonably do it with one hand, no tools required) to the camera. On two other cameras, I've had absolutely no problems at all!

This clean/secure has cured the problem every time and it's never recurred. Not guaranteed, of course, but it's been 100% successful for me. I too wondered if it was the batteries, but it wasn't.

Other odd bits over the decades, simply to get the job done - not merely to polish and brag about cos I'm too mean to buy the polish!

Also having the same problem with the 60D and Canon grip. Sometimes the camera just shuts down after @ 15 - pictures. Unable to turn the camera on or off. Have to tighten thumb wheel, no response, remove battery trey, reinsert the trey and the camera restarts.....Happens whether I use 1 canon battery and 1 aftermarket or 2 aftermarket batteries.

In my situation, I feel it's the grip; which has only been used for 3 months. Have had enough problems that I have removed the grip to see if it happens again. So far, I can't duplicate the problem.

I have the same grip but on a 550D, only issue I had one time was the dial wheel for adjusting exposure would not work, I removed the grip and cleaned the gold contacts and all has been fine since. Maybe the metal in the contacts is not as resistant to surface corrosion and they need cleaning now and then?

Thank you everyone for your advice. I will try to clean the contacts and hope that it works.

I agree, you really have to watch out for the cheap grips. I've had similar problems before and I've just learned to shell out for the expensive stuff. You get what you pay for, I guess..

As an aside to the problem being discussed:

It is not considered wise to mix batteries of differing types and from 2 different manufacturers that is certainly the case. Internal battery resistance is sure to be different, as is output voltage/current.

By all means use two matching 3rd party batteries, just don't mix and match.
