According to a Canon rep, the mark2 24-70L will start arriving on dealers shelves here in the UK next month. Don't shoot the messenger if it does not happen! Going to be about £2200 he claims.

T/S lenses

but yes, I totally agree it's priced too high, but they did it because they can and know people will stay pay for it.

I've heard rumors of possible upgrades for the 35L and 50L, and I would be willing to bet they price them in the $2,000+ region...just because they know people love the original version so much they are willing to overpay for the new version!

I forgot to say he told me that the lens filter size is bigger (80 something mm) and the lens is lighter than the mk1 version.

I still say that Canon should have put I.S. into this lens!

Photographers do it in 1/1,000th of a second...but the memory lasts forever! ;)

If it had been less hectic I'd have told the rep exactly that, but the circumstances were wrong to get into a heavy discussion. Seems an odd decision to me to not offer IS.

They raised the initial price for a smart reason on their part. A lot of people wait to purchase lenses when the initial price comes down months or a year later. Now the price will be high enough that when it is lowered, they will be happy with the higher-lowered price. ;)

Businesses today are run on the "Perception Concept".

The perception is that Canon cares about us.
The truth is they only care about our money, as much of it they can get as possible.
That is how big business is run these days...like it or not.

Some can argue that people overpay for wedding photography as well. If you have a good product, you can put the value to it that you want. Dont we all hate how cheap Rebel cameras are, where everyone can buy one and 'claim' to be a professional?

The specs have been out for a while. While it's shorter and lighter, it's not much shorter or much lighter. It'll still be a brick. ;) IIRC the new filter is 82mm, same as the one on the 24TS-E mII.
It will weigh about 5oz less and be 1/2 and inch shorter while being 1/5" larger in diameter, according to the specs for both lenses as published on the Canon site.

Canon have been looking at what prices Nikon have been getting away with, and have jumped on the same band wagon.

This is nothing new. Businesses charge as much as the market will bear. Lately it has been getting a bit out of hand, with department stores marking product through the roof, anticipating that the marked up price will increase the demand for the goods when they go on "sale". Just look at the amount of sales most department stores have each year.
High end restaurants and luxury goods manufacturers mark up their prices significantly to create an air of status. In economics they're referred to as Velben goods. If people are willing to pay it, why shouldn't they be able to charge it?
Ultimately however, no one starts a business because they care about you. They start a business to make money; hopefully by doing something they love or are good at. They make money by providing a valuable good or service, and they stay in business by keeping their customers happy/satisfied. I've seen plenty of small businesses mark up their rates, including people on this board, and it was generally seen as a good thing. Even though often times the only reason was to shut out the budget/discount seeking customers who so often seem to create the biggest headaches. Somehow it's smart business when we do it but is vilified when a "faceless" company does it.

they might as well make 2 versions, 1 with IS one without, and sell it for 500 more. People will pay for it.

£2,200 is a ridiculous amount to be charging for this lens.
