Some POTN members have fixed a sticky shutter button by pouring a small amount of isopropyl alcohol into the battery box.

This thread is about the 30D, but I think your 5D is built the same as the 30D.

Good luck!

I did the alcohol bit on 30D with good results. There's also some YouTube videos showing how to do it.

mantra, the sticky shutter button is a relatively common problem with Canon dslr cameras. Review the thread at https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=836663 for a 1 minute sticky shutter fix or go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tB_gSqyidI0 (external link) for the YouTube video on a fix.

One note, use a relatively fresh bottle of the isopropyl alcohol, 99% if you can find it, 95% as a minimum. When alcohol is exposed to air it absorbs water so an older bottle maya have quite a bit of water content.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

I can't say with any assurance, you do this at your own risk, but I would not spray anything into the parts of the camera because you lose much of the ability to control the areas where the fluid might travel due to the pressure. I would also not use electronic cleaner because depending on what chemical it is, damage to plastics could result. This is not the case with isopropyl alcohol. The procedure has you add a small quantity of alcohol to the battery compartment while maintaining a certain tilt to the camera to move the liquid specifically into the switch area and then you operate the switch to free it up. Being almost pure isopropyl, it evaporates quite rapidly.

Do a search on the web using canon sticky shutter button. You'll find a lot of people have had success and not too many failures. I personally haven't had the need yet.

Do not use spray cleaner! First, you have little control on where it goes. Secondly, it can have very adverse effects on certainly plastics. I found this out the hard way when I tried spray cleaner on my Apple mighty mouse and literally had it disintegrate in my hand.

crn3371, perhaps you should have just done a copy and paste operation of my response just prior to yours.

Or perhaps, you both were typing the same basic answer and then submitted the results independently. Happens alot, it just means you both are on the same page... :)
