I recently upgraded my computer to 64bit, along with Windows XP Professional X64 Edition

Now when i try and connect my Canon EOS 20D to it via the USB cable, its not being recognised as an extra drive in "My Computer"

Does anyone know if theres a patch to allow this to be recognised?

I only bought the EOS 20D 6 months ago & i'm worried about the compatibilty of the new O/S

Thanks in advance

Could very well be a problem with drivers not supporting the camera yet. This is why I choose to wait 6 ~ 12 months after a new OS comes out so there is better support for it. Seems to me that Windows XP Professional X64 Edition isn't too mainstream just yet.

Hope you find something indeed.

New drivers are required for all devices in x64, and the 20D is no exception. Theoretically 64 bit processing should have significant benefits for digital imaging and video, but only when device manufacturers have jumped on board. I'm not sure if Canon has a 64 bit driver for the 20D yet or not, but it is easy to see why hardware manufacturers do not have this as a top priority since x64 is by no means mainstream as of yet. On the other hand, epson has 64 bit drivers for some of their newer printers available so if there isn't a driver for your device it is only a matter of time.

Does anyone know if photoshop can use the x64 to its advantage?

Can you get a card reader for x64 that would solve the problem for now?

I have x64 running on another computer at home and I had to build my own driver for my 20D to work with it.

Yep, is a driver problem. I still consider it too early to jump to 64bit Windows as there really aren't that many of anything that is out to take advantage of it.

From what I've read, any memory intensive program (i.e. photoshop) will benefit from 64 bit OS, although I haven't heard or seen much in the way of real world experience from current x64 users. Software may need to be optimized to take full advantage of the 64 bit environment, though, depending on the current coding of the program. Someone with more x64 knowledge than I will have to provide the specifics...

The thing we have to keep in mind is that most of the programs/devices you are using now are written in 32 bit or less. To take advantage of the 64 bit OS, these devices programs/devices need to be written in 64 bit. There are some that will run on 64 bit with a slight advantage, but nowhere near the advantage that they will have when written for the 64 bit.

Photoshop will benefit now from more memory..........I don't know; but highly doubted that it has been rewritten to take advantage of a 64 bit OS.

I am waiting for Vista; hoping it will be a lot less buggy pacakage and much more compatiable.

I've been delaying the install of x64 bit windows for over a year because of driver issues. Interesting that I have seen x64 available on some HP machines and I figured it was ready to go. Sounds like perhaps it's not.

Yes it does run better I have 4 gb of ram P4 3.6gig , with CS set to use 80% of the ram instead of the default 50% things are much better

I use a ATI X1800xt 512mb GFX card

BTW I am waiting for canon to do the wia divers as well

Most if not all top end pc's that are on sale are 64 bit capable so it should be a valid OS to use

IMHO xp 64 is very reliable its xp 32 that is buggy, the memory management in xp64 is light years ahead of xp32

X64 will probably take off next year. High-end AMD 64bit CPU based machines are starting to be cheaper than equivalent Intel Xeon based machines. Also, some server based next generation MS products will only support X64.

Drivers are an issue at the moment.... but that's always been the case with new OS's. I've some h/w that I bought new just before XP was released and the h/w manufacturer didn't bother to release an new driver. It's a right PITA.

Lordedmond, I agree the memory management is great, but it still that little problem of "drivers". Notice, I didn't say it wasn't a good OS, but rather one that doesn't at the moment have too much driver support. I do suspect that the 4GB of ram has a lot to do with your Photoshop perfoming so much better.

So, I'd like to point out this is almost a year after this thread started and still no 64bit driver. Pretty disapointing.

Now normally, I use my card reader, tonight, it broke. So here I am, midnight, have work to do and I can't get the pictures off my camera.

The REALLY disapointing this about this, is that the driver probably does a simple OS version check, xp64 or whatever the version shows up as is not on the list so the driver fails to install. It's not like a team of software developers has to reinvent the wheel to make this happen.

32-bit programs such as Photoshop CS should (mostly) run on 64-bit Windows without problems, but to really take advantage of 64-bit mode, you'll need software that is specially compiled to 64-bit.

AFAIK there is no 64-bit version of Photoshop (yet). I've heard rumours a long time ago that the next version of PS will be available in a 64-bit version. We'll see...

I'm using 32-bit Win XP now at home, and I'm also waiting to see what happens with Windows Vista. If the driver support will be better for 64-bit Vista, I'll prefer the 64-bit version.

In theory, 64-bit programs could run up to about 20-30% faster than 32-bit programs.
