End of the month I'm going on a week long road trip from the uk to milan

the road trip will go through several country parks as well as some cities. The main attraction is the road through the alps. we're taking the long scenic route from Zurich to Milan.

Now i'm looking to hire a nice lens for the trip. I've got a 50mm and a 18-105kit lens

What lens would you recommend to take? a wide lens or a telephoto? any specific recommendations would be most welcome!

thanks

Imran

Elaborate on the kit lens you have... an 18-55, 18-135, or 24-105? I'd personally get something wide, but that's just me. I like wide lenses for my landscapes.

i was thinking of a good quality L lens to hire out around the 10-55 range to get pictures as wide as possible.

what would be the benefits of a telephoto lens?

Some people use telephotos for landscapes too, I personally find it a lot harder to get decent composition with them for landscapes. You could use a telephoto to bring a select portion of the mountains closer.

I'm assuming you're using a crop camera. I'd hire the EF-s 10-22.

You won't find an L that is an ultrawide on a crop camera like the 600D. (Well there is the 14L, but I don't think you would be intersted in that). 10-22 is usually regarded as the best ultrawide for crop cameras.

Good recommendation on the 10-22.

I've got FF but love landscape work and really enjoy working the wide angle end of things. Yes, you can do telephoto landscape work but it's far more challenging and a bit more limiting. You can get some interesting effects by getting in low with a WA. Click on the first shot here in the link below - I believe I was at 24mm:

And here's an example of low and close in:

That's not really an ultrawide on a crop camera.

If you want a single lens with max flexibility for a crop body, seriously check out the Tamron 18-270. It can get soft above 200...but is sharp below that. Is it up to L standards? No, but neither is the cost, size, or weight. If I were wanting a walkaround for a FF body, I would stick with 24-105.

10-22 is far and away the best choice IMO. I have that, and the 16-35L and the 10-22 is ten times the fun. I love that lens, and it is SHARP. My only wish is that it would mate with my full frame cameras.

If you have it in mind to blow all your money on an extremely wide lens, you could jump in on the 8-15m L: 8-15mm L (external link)
