I live in Orlando, and yes the police told me to check Craigslist and eBay frequently to see if anything seems suspicious...

Also, I know the insurance company will have some answers for me but they are closed until the morning and I just couldnt wait and figured I'd ask to see if anyone had any ideas or advice immediately

Last, I will be replacing the gear and I will most likey use the check and kick in some money to get a 5d3, but since things won't be settled before this trip to costa rica (and getting a 5d3 is slow these days), any suggestions on a camera to purchase and bring in the meantime. Ie something I'll still be glad to have (because its convenient) even after I buy a new slr kit. Maybe a decent compact super zoom or the s100 or a water resistant camera.

S100. I have a 5D3, but keep the S100 for convenience. Great little camera.

Sorry to hear about your situation. Hope everything works out for you.

thought I should put my input here too. You seem very calm for having all your equipment stolen. What a way to start your vacation eh.

Yeah well like I said, my family is fine, I still have my vacation, and it's just stuff... I just wish I could get a couple pieces of heirloom jewelry back for my wife... They're not even that valuable monetarily, but they were from her deceased grandmothers and are irreplaceable... Camera gear is not only replaceable, its upgradable, so it seems pretty trivial in comparison.

Unfortunately I have no advice on how to handle the insurance. Just couldn't read and not post, glad your family is well. Sorry for your wife, like you said cameras are replaceable, family heirlooms are not. I absolutely hate thieves and it really leaves you feeling violated.

List all of your gear serial code lens code or so, maybe people will see it somewhere and can help you.
Really sorry to hear this, but for the good part, you can go to FF without hesitation! ....
Just cheer up. There's an Chinese old saying, how could somebody to know it for sure that he lost his horse?

I had all my gear stolen whilst on holiday in Spain, was covered on my home insurance thankfully and was new replacement cost, not depreciated. So I was paid out high street prices which came to about £8000, the price to replace was about £7000 from an online seller that I use, so I managed to add a 135L to my kit and still have some change. The insurance company initially wanted me to use their supplier which I said I did not want to do and their first offer was over £1000 lower than what I finally accepted, so don't just accept their first offer if you are not happy with it. It all worked out quite well for me and I ended up with all brand new kit bit I lost all my holiday photos. Hope everything goes as smoothly for you

I have a State Farm personal articles policy covering my gear. it has no deductible, and inflation coverage to where if something is stolen or damaged, if the current model I had is no longer available, it will be reimbursed with the value of the current model.

for around $6k of gear, I'm paying roughly $100 a year coverage.

sorry to hear about your gear :-(

Now is the time to exercise extreme care as robbers sometime return for act two figuring everything they took has been replaced.

Personal or commercial use policy?

I also have State Farm. I inquired about insuring all my gear at replacement cost as non-commercial use. Agent quoted me $100 for ~$9600...that included no deductible.
