it's a personal articles policy. I don't make money from photography, it's merely a hobby at this point.

if I made money, it would be an entirely different policy (and more expensive).

Ouch! I hope your insurance company treats you well. I'd be very upset for a while if all my gear got stolen.

I'm in Canada. Isn't that weird!

Sorry to hear that, I too hate a thief! Good luck with your insurance and better luck putting your finger on the A-hole that did it! And for consideration, keep in mind that many of these guys, while not smart enough to not do the crime in the first place, ARE smart enough to know things like that get replaced...they may come back to see what's new! So make sure you get the coverage on your new gear and a good safe isn't a bad idea.

PLL, if you have a business name (as it appears you do) State Farm will deny a claim and refuse further insurance. I used to use State Farm and had a Personal Articles Policy, found out I'd be denied if I ever made a claim (was friends with my agent) and went with a business policy. Found out State Farms business policy had a huge deductable, now use Traveler's. When you call yourself PLL Photography, they'll find that and deny you...figuring if you weren't making money you wouldn't have a business name. Just sayin.....

Not telling you to commit fraud but, my advice would be to either A. claim additional items, or B. dont provide the receipts and claim you had items of higher value, to make back your deductable... but again im not saying completely lie. Im just saying try to work the system a little...

Yes do what he said if they don't ask for receipts or if they do just say they got stolen with the gear...

Oh yeah, and dgiglio? You actually are encouraging someone to commit insurance fraud...careful! That's jail time my friend! Stealing from the Insurance company by massaging your losses is the same thing as the guy breaking into the house in the first place. Stealing is stealing!

Glad the OP has a good attitude about it. Hope you get replacement value. I know what you mean on jewelry. My wife was a victim of a smash and grab on her car. She was in a court house where she basically can't bring her purse. She left it hidden in her car and they grabbed it. It had some heirloom earrings and our old P&S in it. We didn't file a claim for the lost property, but it cost the insurance company $3500 to get her 3 month old car back to "like new". Was a real headache with credit cards and bank accounts though.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Very glad to hear everyone is safe. As stated before, go through your insurance agent and don't deal with the company directly. Back in the 90's my little girl was hit by a car (Minor injuries) and the company called me and was giving me fits because my 6 yr old had run in front of the car in the middle of the block. Called my agent and he said he would take care of it and the company never called me again, only dealt with the agent.

Sorry to sound like a broken record, but I am sorry for what happened, it truly sucks. I've had car break-ins happen to me in the past 10 years or so, and even that sucks. And I'm glad you and your family are safe.

Funny, about an hour ago I dropped off a final document to my insurance company to get my gear covered. I have Nationwide, and I have a renter's policy, and luckily my equipment is covered now, and it only adds $115 per year to my insurance. Not too bad... The only thing was that I had to provide a bill-of-sale for anything worth over $2,500. I'm taking a family trip in August, bringing only one camera and lens, but it would KILL me if something happened...

The camera gear was stollen from the room in our house we use as an office. Funny thing is, it was all on the desk next to our beautiful iMac but they left that... They did steal our tv, jewelry, cash, a nice humidor full of super premium cigars, a kindle, and an iPad.

I keep remembering items I have To add to the list of stolen items like my BW polarizing filters and lens hoods and even the sling straps and other cleaning times that were all in the Tenba backpack they took.

I spoke to the insurance company today and it seems like my coverage is pretty good. I have to wait for the official adjuster to contact me now but my policy will give me replacement value. Couple that with money from a couple things that are irreplaceable but we should still be compensated for (some of the jewelry) and we should have the deductible covered.

Thanks everyone for all the support. Hopefully it won't be long til I'll be shooting again with some new gear.

Still kills me to hear that... Ugh... Maybe they didn't have time for the iMac, got spooked or something. Still sucks...hope the replacement process goes well.
