On 6th of December, 1917 Finland got it's indepence from Russia. Today we celebrate our 88th Independence Day. The traditions include e.g. University Students' Torch Parade (external link), which passes the the Presidential Palace (external link) and ends at the Senate Square (external link) next to the Helsinki (external link)Cathedral (external link).

Here are some pictures from today. Enjoy and celebrate with us! :D

One more year of independence. The weather is the same, also the parade, no reason to take new shots. ;) Enjoy.

Thanks Dimitri for your kind words. Our generation is very lucky not to have to experience the same as our (grand) parents.

Ah yes, but I bet the people are different this year, or at least a year older. ;)

Thanks for sharing, and Happy Independence Day!

Heippa Ollie Horray for the Finns on their day of celebration .Northeast Ohio has several large communities of Finns who came to the shores of Lake Erie to work in shipping and steel. We like our Finnish neighbors

Thanks Frank and Sam!

I remember well my late 1980's visit to Hancock, MI, located next to Lake Superior. I was surprised about the very strong Finnish community there, even some of the street signs were both in English and Finnish, and shopkeepers (not the young ones) were still speaking Finnish. You can find there e.g. Finnish Americal Heritage Center (external link). Nice memories.

Not a bad idea (for Canadians): to have a neutral and independent buffer state in between. (This is not a political statement, so calm down all mods. :D) - Thanks Pet.
