I have seen online someone adding a mini mono jack to a 285hv. The person didn't post exactly where they got it. My question is has anyone tried to do this with a stereo jack? Will it still work?

You want to use a mono jack if you do this.

Actually, you could probably use a stereo jack if you had to, but a mono one makes everything simpler. I have heard of folks using stereo jacks forhacks with the RPCube (external link).

Anyhoo, back to the part you want. Try this thread: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=256447

The first post has a link to the Radio Shack part at the end of the post (assuming by "mini" you mean 3.5mm, and not 2.5mm). I picked up a three-pack at my local bricks'n'mortar RS to add a 3.5mm sync port to my YN-560 as well as a 580EX. I tried to use the third one to take the place of the missing PC input on a Yongnuo RF-600TX, but failed miserably, alas.

I'm a woman. I shoot with a Fuji X100T, Panasonic GX-7, Canon 5DmkII, and 50D. flickr stream (external link)
