I'm looking for a light weight tripod to carry while bicycling. My wife surprised me with a cycling trip that will include several waterfalls. I want to be able to shoot the falls and know I'll need a slow shutter speed and a tripod. Any recommendations?

I'd like something light and compact. I'll be shooting with my Canon 7d and either my 24-70mm or 85mm.

Thanks,
Motown

Ben - I'll check that out. Under $200 if I can. I'd like to add a ball head to my kit as well which I know will raise the budget. My current manfrotto tripod has a fluid head for video which isn't real handy for still shots.

Owain - I'm 5'10".

too tall for my manfrotto then. it is extremely light but only works well if you are short arse like me. I compromised on length to get one as light as possible. It is just below eye level fully extended. Not good if you are taking shots looking up. but it only weighs 0,9kg so I'm happy.

Light weight tripods are carbon fiber and expensive. Light weight cheap tripods are not stable. It's a tradeoff.

You can certainly find an aluminum, very stable tripod for less than $200, but it will have to be heavy.

So $200 for the legs and say $100 for the head? Hmmm... $300 total doesnt give you quite enough for a quality light weight tripod. More like a quality, tried and true, solid (but heavy) setup.

I was just taking a stab at $$$. How much would it take to get a lightweight compact tripod?

The Feisol 3441 that I have is about $400. Benro makes one called the Angel, not sure of the prices, but check at B&H. Both are carbon fiber.

There are other makers for perhaps less money, but check them out by asking questions about who has used them here and how they rate.

Feisols have a very good rep here.

Bear in mind that you can choose only two of the following three variables for standard height tripods: Lightweight, Sturdy, Inexpensive.

Have a look at the Benro travel angel tripods. I just ordered the A2682TB1 for $200 and will try to post some sort of review for it (haven't seen a specific review for it anywhere).

This particular model may not be the most lightweight, but the travel angel is a series and there are smaller / lighter versions like the A1692 etc.

I'll post the link to the place on ebay where I bought it.

They are based in Hong Kong, but they have free shipping and ship very fast.

Just type in Benro in the search tool and look at some of the reviews.

Also check prices on B&H, Amazon or Adorama, and check for how much weight each tripod is rated for. It should be 2-3 times the weight of your heaviest body and lens. Ratings are not standardized, but it will give you an idea about whether a travel tripod is meant for a point and shoot camera or for your 7D, for example.

That is an excellent piece of advice.

The weight rating of a tripod really says nothing at all about how rigid the tripod is. It simply states that a certain weight won't crumple the tripod.

There is no standard rating test used by all reputable tripod manufacturers. Thus, it's impossible to compare tripods from different manufacturers based on their ratings.

I'm also in the market for a travel tripod, and I've been looking hard at the Benro's. I didn't ebay had such a great selection and much lower-than-retail prices. Thanks for the link!

Thats not right.

My travel tripod is a Berlebach mini (external link), and that is lightweight, sturdy and inexpensive, but its not a very high tripod ;)
